About the Author

James A. Fagin is a professor of criminal justice studies at Lincoln College—Normal (LCN), located in Normal, Illinois. In addition to being a teaching faculty member, he serves as the program director for the criminal justice science program. He founded the criminal justice studies Bachelor of Science degree at LCN. Previously, Jim served as Graduate School Dean at East Stroudsburg University and for a decade as Director of the first and largest criminal justice program in the state of Hawai’i. He has served as Acting President of a three-year college in Kenya, East Africa.

Jim Fagin is a pioneer in criminal justice education and has been involved in innovative criminal justice education programs for four decades. He developed one of the early models of statewide delivery of criminal justice undergraduate and graduate degrees. During the developing years of criminal justice education, Jim worked as a consultant and instructor for the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) to develop model criminal justice curriculum in research, administration, and planning to promote quality nationwide education in criminal justice. These model curriculums were developed by an elite team of practitioners and educators and were field-tested throughout the United States.

Jim wrote some of the classical literature on computer crime, police bargaining and unions, presidential candidate security, domestic disturbance resolution, and hostage negotiations. His articles on international terrorism have been translated and published in major criminal justice journals in Japan. He received the American Society of Criminal Justice Hawai’i chapter’s award for outstanding contributions to Public Administration for his achievement in establishing a master’s degree in public administration at Chaminade University of Honolulu. He has received numerous other awards for contributions to hotel security, forensic investigations, and excellence in teaching. These works emerged from active involvement with federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies.

Jim was a commissioned deputy sheriff and training officer and polygraph examiner for the Wyandotte County (Kansas) Sheriff ’s Department and a Commissioned Reserve Police Officer in the Kansas City (Kansas) Police Department. He has worked as a consultant with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities. He served on the Kansas Victims’ Rights Commission to help establish the charter victims’ rights legislation for the state. He assisted in implementing the first domestic disturbance response policy for the Wichita, Kansas Police Department. He has been a criminal justice professor, graduate dean, and college president. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University—Carbondale, Illinois. Textbooks such as this are an ongoing work in progress, and the author welcomes communication and correspondence about his work. About the Author
Sarah Hake is adjunct professor of biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and center director of the USDA Plant Gene Expression Center. She was among the first plant scientists to discover homeoboxes in plants, a major discovery that has created a new subfield in plant science.

Fred Wilt is professor of biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been an active researcher for years and is recognized for fundamental contributions in the regulation of gene expression in marine invertebrate embryos. For many years he was an associate editor of the flagship journal in the field, Developmental Biology.

short and to the point!

This is a great textbook for developmental biology students, or for people looking for general information on the subject! The text contains background "boxes" with information on genetics and biochemistry so you dont really need background knowledge in those subjects to understand the content of the book. It is short, so it doesn't go into too much detail but there's enough information to understand the concepts! This text is not like most texts where they are so boring and hard to read that you just give up. It's fairly easy reading and keeps things interesting enough to read the assigned pages.

Frankly, I'd rather stab myself in the eyes than read this book.

The book is written from a "biology for dummies" perspective... in an effort to dumb down the material for the masses, the authors have actually made it harder to read.

Dev bio is taught as an upper division class, so most people reading this book have at least had general biology and probably cell biology in their background. Yet, in an effort to make the book more approachable (good idea), the authors avoid the biology words we already know (bad idea). The failure to use established language of biology makes the writing inefficient and obtuse. Clearly, anyone reading this book has more than a passing interest in biology, the assumption that readers are ignorant is more than a little frustrating and it wastes a heck of a lot of time.

It takes about 4 hours to read 20 pages because of the thick and meaningless language. Sifting through all the pompous windbag bs and dense, extraneous verbiage is tedious (example... "It may come as no surprise..." "in order to come to grips with...". The chest thumping and harumping is also meaningless and distracting.

While they are so busy dumbing down biology, you practically need a dictionary of middle English language to read the archaic verbiage. "Thence" and "armamentarium"? Seriously??? I have gone my whole life without ever seeing the word "thence" used in a sentence, and I find it in a BIOLOGY BOOK??? (if you want to know why I think it's archaic, it is an adverb of Shakespearean usage). "Group" would have sufficed for the armamentarium usage, especially since there was nothing weapon or tool like about the so-described structures. (As it were, using armamentarium was inappropriate in this context).

I'm kind of a Joe Friday kinda gal... "Just the facts, ma'm..." so I find all of this superfluous crap especially irritating.

The editor was sleeping when this book got the green light... there are errors all over the place. I lost count of the mistakes very early.

This book would be worlds better if the authors thinned down and consolidated the material from Gilbert, instead of trying to re-invent the biology language wheel with every sentence. It would be a lot more pleasant to read if they keep their meaningless editorial drivel to themselves. Oh yeah, and if someone had checked for typos before printing.

The other reviewer who gushed about this book is either an idiot, didn't read it, or a friend of the authors.

On the plus side, the book is well organized (the chapter sequence makes sense). And it's cheap

Gilbert is more complicated because it goes into greater depth and covers more of the molecular details, yet it is an easier read, simply because the writing is eons better. Oh, and the technical information is accurately presented with a minimal amount of errors (number found so far in Gilbert: zero)

Good introductory text, needs a glossary.

I like the text and the simplicity of much of the descriptions of genetics throughout development. I would give this book 5 stars if they would add a glossary. Many times, they bolded terms, but used them in a way that you couldn't easily extract the meaning of the term. I could look up each term online, but the text is supposed to be my reference, not Google.

Bill Yosses has been a pastry chef for over thirty years. He has served apprenticeships in France and worked under chefs Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller at the Polo Restaurant in New York City. He was executive pastry chef at Joseph Citarella in New York City and at the 4-star Bouley Restaurant and Bakery. He currently lives in Washington, DC, and is the executive pastry chef at the White House.

Melissa Clark writes a weekly column for the New York Times and is the author of many cookbooks. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Buyer beware: Lots of inconsistencies and bad info here

So many cookbooks are hurriedly produced and thus contain many errors. It is a disappointment that this book falls into this category. My first attempt, "Red Eye Devil's Food Cake" (pages 183-185) had two errors, one minor in scope [wrong instructions for creating multiple layers from a single layer cake] but one fairly major, listing "2 cups of coffee (8 ounces, 230 grams)" as an ingredient. Well, I had no idea if they really wanted 2 cups of coffee or 1 (it was 2, I had to re-make the cake after going with 1 cup). Then I thought I would try "Fluffy Golden Waffles", page 16. Sure enough, the ingredients list 2 large eggs separated but the instructions simply say "add the eggs". On page 18: 1 cup of cake flour weighs 113 grams; on page 25: 2 cups of cake flour weigh 450 grams! Need 4 large eggs? Page 18, 7 ounces/200 grams; page 183: 6.3 ounces/193 grams; page 57: 8 ounces/220 grams. The mistakes and inconsistencies are abundant. I recommend readers wait a year or more for a 2nd edition which should have the kinks worked out. Oh, and skip the part on page 'x' of the Acknowledgements where the authors sing the praises of "the greatest cookbook editors" and brag of the "meticulous testing" done. I think not.

Our apologies for the misprints in the book, I hope the following corrections help.
Measurements
1. page 25, 2 cups Cake Flour is 8 oz (not 16oz)
2. page 25. half cup sugar should be 3.5 oz (100grams) (not 6oz, 170 g)
3. page 183, should read "2 cups strong brewed coffee (16 oz , 454 grams)
4. page 186, second line should read "repeat TWO more times to obtain 4 layers from each of the two cakes
5. page 217, ingredients for PEANUT BUTTER WHITE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
should read 2 � cups heavy cream (18 ounces. 513g)

Methods and Direction;
6. page 150, directions "FOR THE CAKE" step 3 last sentence, "set on a rack over a rimmed baking sheet" is meant for step 5 when you are glazing the finished cake.
7 page 26, step 5 should read "Whisk together sugar, lemon juice and zest" not "egg white and milk" .
8. page 183, Red Eye Devils Food Cake just above the recipe should read:
"MAKES 1 (9 -INCH ) 8 LAYER CAKE TO SERVE 10".
9. Page 193 and 194 Small Lemon Chiffon Layer Cake; the 4 large eggs are whole not separated

Wish Bill Yosses would say they have found all of the mistakes and made corrections!

The pictures are beautiful, but with the mistakes, I am a bit afraid to try some of them for fear there are more mistakes. There is a list of some of the mistakes. I wish the authors with note that they have corrected all of the mistakes. I did try the cake on the front, it looked lovely, but not sure I would make it again. The reason I bought the book was to make that cake for my husband's 93 birthday party.

He shows us how we can literally re-wire our brains, and how this relates to the science of neuroplasticity.

The Best One-A-Day Book I've Read.

This newest book by Dr. Shad Helmstetter is a stellar companion to his classic "What To Say When You Talk To Your Self" and his recent "The Power of Neuroplasticity." When "What To Say . . . " was published in the mid-80's, I read it and immediately bought several. I would give it to people who were negative or struggling. This newest book will be even more effective as a gift because of how its message is presented. Self-Talk tips are gently sprinkled throughout a year's worth of great Self-Talk phrases. These tips explain everything the reader needs to know to embark on a course of new, right Self-Talk. This is an easy read and offers the single most important tool people need to succeed. Readers will learn how to rewire their brains! You'll want your own copy for sure. (My only challenge was to not read all 365 days at once!)

One of his best books yet!

This is a fantastic book by my friend and mentor Dr. Shad Helmstetter. Each morning I read the days self talk script, ponder it, underline it and sometimes make notes. Then I try and review it throughout the day so that it sticks. This coupled with listening to self talk on selftalkplus.com really makes my days go better. Thank you Dr. Helmstetter for once again creating a wonderful tool to help make our lives better.

A timeless, haunting classic

The attack on Pearl Harbor shocked isolationist-prone Americans into the reality of a world on the brink of disaster, but the savvy, Empire-building English had been all too aware of the international dangers long before then. In 1933, James Hilton wrote of a civilization that was threatened as never before by power-mad dictators and their mindlessly destructive followers. His description is as powerful and chilling today as when it was written.

Hilton was a minister's son who was born in 1900 and died of cancer at the age of 54. He was a literary wunderkind who published his first novel at the age of twenty and went on to write a series of best-sellers, to win an Oscar for his screenplay "Mrs. Miniver" and to appear as a host on American television. He describes Hugh Conway (the protagonist of LOST HORIZON) as a Renaissance Man, but he had some claim to that title himself.

Conway (to my thinking) is an appealing man, but all of the characters in this book are cardboard stereotypes and I think that was deliberate. I suspect that the author didn't want the characters (and their relationships) to get in the way of the story of Shangri-la itself and its importance in the future of the human race. Although Hilton was a prolific (some say TOO prolific) writer, this book has the feel of one into which the author has poured his soul.

I think Hugh Conway WAS James Hilton - a sensitive, intelligent man who was famous and successful but who was never totally comfortable in his role. He was also a man of compassion and he had the typical well-bred Englishman's sense of responsibility toward the lower orders. In the midst of his own prosperity and fame, he saw the rise of Fascism and the Japanese invasion of China as tragedies - not just for the people directly affected - for all decent humans. Hugh Conway CARED, which is why this book continues to be as relevant as it was 80 years ago. It is a reminder of the brevity of life and the self-destructive stupidity of violence, bigotry, and cruelty.

Worth a Re-read, Great Escape Novel

I was happy to see this story available as a Kindle book now. I had read it many years ago in book form and after seeing the movie again, decided to give it a re-read. It really is a touching, beautiful story for the most part and I do like the book version better overall than the movie. I thought the characters were better in the book than in the movie and I liked how the story began better too.

One thing that I've never thought "fit" in this story was how the pilot knocked out the original pilot and then threw him off the plane. Would this be how someone from a place like Shangri la would actually act? It seemed so violent to me, especially considering the battle that was going on on the ground at the time which almost certainly would have meant the death of the original pilot.

If you want to escape to a beautiful place for a while, at least in your mind, this is still a worthwhile read. I like to think that it's true about this being loosely based on the actual people of Hunza in Pakistan. How wonderful to think that there actually is or at least was, a place close to being this idyllic.

Still an excellent book.

This is a handsome reproduction of the original 1936 classic. I've purchased several to give away to people. There are a number of differences between the book and the first movie, but the movie sometimes make better sense than the book; in the movie the recalcitrant person is Conway's brother. This makes Conway's decision to leave even more difficult for him. Of course today satellites make a Shangri-La impossible to hide. Still, the idea of a place like Shangri-La is as attractive as ever, and the theme still makes one hope that such a place could exist. Hilton wrote 23 books and several were made into movies: Goodbye Mr. Chips, Random Harvest Mrs. Miniver and five more. Often called a sentimentalist, Hilton didn't mind the label, and I rather think of him as a optimist. We can use a little optimism.

A sweet murder/mystery

Annie & Flynn are so cute. He is pretty perfect, but in this one we get to see him losing his cool a bit when more if his past comes to haunt him.

It's fun to watch Annie challenge herself to work through the various manifestations of her mental illness. And while the main mystery is tied up there are enough loose ends in Annie's life to make me curious about the next book.
