About the Author
Philippe G. Ciarlet began his academic career at the Universit� Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, in 1974, and moved to City University of Hong Kong in 2002. He is a member of eight academies, including the French Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Hong Kong Institution of Science, and he is a Fellow of SIAM and the AMS. Ciarlet is the recipient of a Grand Prize from the French Academy of Sciences and a Humboldt Research Award, as well as many other awards. He is Doctor Honoris Causa, or Honorary Professor, at eight universities and the author of 190 research papers and 15 books.

HIGHLY recommended! Ciarlet does a masterful job of presenting all you need to know of linear and nonlinear analysis. Head and shoulders above other texts on the subject (but I must exclude Zeidler's fantastic, multi-volume treatment of functional analysis!). Proofs are clear and detailed, no "it is clear that..." handwaving. His treatment of diff calculus in a B-space setting is among the most readable I've seen. He even has a long chapter on diff geo in B-spaces. The focus is on hard analysis techniques, and maybe a bit less on general TVS theory, but that only makes the techniques stand out. (If you want some more generality, look at Zeidler's series, for example, to see homology used in functional analysis.).
For example, in his proof of a generalized Implicit Function Theorem ( pp. 548ff) he needs the fact that there is no retraction of the disk (in finitely many dimensions, of course) onto its boundary. He first shows there is no C^2 retraction, then he shows that, if a retraction exists, it has to be C^2!
Problem sets are well-designed and help fill out the subject. I can't praise this masterpiece enough. There's enough material for a lifetime. Ciarlet has done a great service to students and researchers.

It is 6 years and 8 months and this story still has appeal.
Calhoun, the younger brother at 32, is in partnership with older brother, Justin Ballenger and run a cattle feeding lot in Jacobsville, Texas. [Wow! what a beginning to the Long, Tall Texans.]
The feedlot business skyrocketed with Justin's business sense and Calhoun's feel for marketing.
Abigail Clark was 15 when her mother and the Ballenger brothers' father were killed just before their wedding. The two young men took in the heartbroken Abby as their ward. Now six years later, just three months before Abby's 21st birthday we learn of the many conflicts going on in this Texas town.
We also meet Shelby Jacob and her brother Tyler, whose grandfather was the founder of Jacobsville.
Abby feels so inferior to the blond bombshells that Calhoun dates that she feels that she has to defy his restrictions.
Calhoun does not love any of his "women" but all it takes is a little skin and a lot of imagination for him to start feeling jealous of any mans' intentions toward Abby.
Justin is more tollerant but just as watchful and slightly amused as he watches the changes coming about in Calhoun.
We soon learn why the dark eyed, black haired, reticient, Justin harbors a vengeful attitude toward the beautiful black haired, green-eyed Shelby.
Abby's rebellion leads her to emotional confusion [some girls mature later emotionally]and she doesn't know how to handle her embaressment with a man's passion and body. [about time we have a gal like this]. She just needed time.
Calhoun [like a lot of men] didn't know how to handle, emotionally, a virginal young woman - although it seems that he left a few broken hearts behind.
I did like the skillful handling of D. Palmer of the delicate situations and scenes and emotions of her characters that brought them to living, breathing life. GREAT WORK, as in most all of this series.
I give it an unequivically HIGH RECOMMENDATION. I set a high standard for the characters I like.

Nice, but too short.

Overall good story. The usual young lady falling in love with a ladies' man 10-15 years older. Abby is portrayed as innocent but not stupid. Calhoun is the usual tough, not wanting marriage man. However, I think it was a little too rushed at the end. Out of nowhere Calhoun comes and offers Abby marriage. Not a surprise of course, but I still think it lacked a little closure. Also, there were other characters involved with too much information on them. Good story, but needed more to be great.

Skip it. Published in 1988, these characters have NOT aged well

Note: Stand alone read. 1st of Long Tall Texans series. Includes sexual content.

Well written, but this is the same-old "rich, older, hunk falls for young, innocent virgin" plot. The dated sexist attitudes are reflective of the 1980s, the dialogue is trite, the ending smarmy, the male double-standard is distasteful, the constant jealousy and arguing over sex becomes really annoying. All detract from the plot, which is rather bazaar in the first place.

THE STORY follows the Ballenger brothers, Justin (37 years) and Calhoun (33 years), guardians for Abby Clark since she was 15-years old. Abby (now 20), immature, self-absorbed virgin is desperate for love-em-and-leave-em Calhoun to notice her, discover he loves her, and give up his philandering ways . Predictably, he does, but these STEREOTYPED characters did not play well in the 1990s and certainly do NOT play well today.

OVERALL, an easy read. The new cover looks great, but it is the same old book. MY ADVICE is, skip it, and try one of her later books. There are a lot better books out there.

About the Author
Oscar G. Brockett will always have an international reputation as a theatre historian. A Distinguished Scholar honoree of the American Society of Theatre Research, he received career achievement awards from both the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. In addition, he was a recipient of the Robert Lewis Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Research. After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University, he taught at several major American universities and at the University of Bristol in England. He also served as president of the American Theatre Association, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, editor of THEATRE JOURNAL, and editorial board member of the ASIAN THEATRE JOURNAL. He held the prestigious University of Texas Z.T. Scott Family Chair in Drama and was director of the Center for Dramatic and Performance Studies for several years. Dr. Brockett authored many articles in leading journals and several books, including HISTORY OF THE THEATRE. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a distinguished teaching professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the dean of the Fellows of the American Theatre.

Robert J. Ball has ample experience as a successful teacher of Introduction to Theatre and Theatre Appreciation courses at a number of large and small universities, including Trinity University, the University of Texas, and Vanderbilt University. He is also a practicing actor and director with numerous professional credits in American regional theatres, as well as credits for national and international touring productions. Dr. Ball received his Ph.D. in theatre history and criticism from the University of Texas and is currently the chair and artistic director of the Theatre Arts program at the University of the Incarnate Word.

The new edition is even better than previous one!

I bought the last edition of The Essential Theatre (7th) for a class. It was easy to read and covered just about everything one could hope for in an introductory text. Now I'm a graduate student studying theatre. I bought the new edition to review the material I had a few years ago and was surprised to find a number of exciting new features including greater use of the internet to expand on subjects covered in the text. This book was very good before but with so many new features and the same authoritative coverage it's a pure joy and "essential" reading for anyone who truly cares about the Theatre.

Bought this book for a college class. I have found it to be very interesting and inspiring. It has helped me understand a lot of the things we see around today. I suppose that nothing is new under the sun!!
