At fist I was deceived by Ranjit Maharaj's apparent very simple English, very straight to the point, and to make it worse, when you read the transcription, it does seem very simple, and even stupid.

But when you hear him live, on You Tube, his utterances and off the cuff wordings are coming from 'the top of his head', as we say in England. What I mean is, it isn't rehearsed and it isn't designed for the audience. Rather, I struggle to understand because Ranjit Maharaj isn't speaking to me or for you. They sat him on a chair on stuck a microphone on his jacket. This is how enlightenment sounds like!

One question asked was to do with the silent mind. Most people confuse description with a prescription. Ranjit Maharaj gave a brilliant answer that slotted the confusion into place and was the opposite of the spiritual supermarket.

I scratched my head when Shri Ranjit says "Nothing is true" in the audio's. I have to listen a few times and compare to the other audio's and it clicked. By 'Nothing', I think Ranjit Maharaj is referring to the ultimate reality but for us it is nothing, but for the sage, it is truth. Hence, nothing is true.

There are many cryptic statements and apparent non sequiturs is these talks. But I have read descriptions of what an enlightened person will sound like, and that's how they speak. Rankit says apparent crazy things but that is our level. On the higher level, he makes sense!

Nisargadatta Maharaj's I Am That is in beautiful flowing English, with gorgeous sentences, but mere mortals can't speak like that, and you get swept away by the language. This is probably why Americans love I Am That, but basking in great literature isn't the idea and doesn't cut through Illusion.

Illusion vs Reality isn't as well written but I find the words hitting the target easier. Being fluent in English, Ranjit Maharaj doesn't use fancy Sanskrit, rather, he communicates the Truth that is so simple that it can easily be interpreted as madness. Just accept that you are God Almighty until your flickering ego melts like a candle flame moving too close to the brilliant, outpouring stillness.

One criticism. The questions here are simplistic and lame. In I Am That, the questions are rich and complicated. In that classic, you had philosophers, and doctors, as well as seekers shouting at Nisargadatta Maharaj and challenging him.

In this book, there are no tough challenging questions. I guess modern Westerners will not be as shouting as the locals in Mumbai and Ranjit Maharaj was very old when he gave these talks. Amazingly, he seems to have been talking right up to the time he dropped his (the) body.

Still, Ranjit Maharaj here sounds like a true sage. It is all Illusion. This won't be easily understood by a person new to this subject but if you've been reading for years, then this book will give you a leg up!

Kien, the protagonist of this rambling and sometimes nearly incoherent but emotionally gripping account of the Vietnam war, is a 10-year veteran whose experiences bear a striking similarity to those of the author, a Hanoi writer who fought with the Glorious 27th Youth Brigade. The novel opens just after the war, with Kien working in a unit that recovers soldiers' corpses. Revisiting the sites of battles raises emotional ghosts for him, "a parade of horrific memories" that threatens his sanity, and he finds that writing about those years is the only way to purge them. Juxtaposing battle scenes with dreams and childhood remembrances as well as events in Kien's postwar life, the book builds to a climax of brutality. A trip to the front with Kien's childhood sweetheart ends with her noble act of sacrifice, and it becomes clear to the reader that, in Vietnam, purity and innocence exist only to be besmirched. Covering some of the same physical and thematic terrain as Novel Without a Name (see above), The Sorrow of War is often as chaotic in construction as the events it describes. In fact, it is untidy and uncontrolled, like the battlefield it conveys. The point of view slips willy-nilly from the third person to the first, without any clear semblance of organization. The inclusion of a deaf mute who falls for Kien, and acts for a while as a witness to his life, seems gratuitous. The faults of this book are also its strengths, however. Its raggedness aptly evokes the narrator's feverish view of a dangerous and unpredictable world. And its language possesses a ferocity of expression that strikes the reader with all the subtlety of a gut-punch. Polishing this rough jewel would, strangely, make it less precious.

A novel addition to fiction from the Indochina conflict, this quasi-autobiographical story depicts a North Vietnamese infantryman trying to purge his grisly memories through writing. Sitting in his dingy Hanoi room, drinking day after day away, the central character, Kien, records in no set order his enlistment into the army, the bombing of his troop train, hellish firefights and napalming in the Central Highlands (an area superstitiously dubbed by Kien's comrades the "Jungle of the Screaming Souls"), his escape from an American patrol after the Tet offensive of '68, combat in Saigon's fall in '75, and his memory-piquing work on a postwar MIA detail. Each chunk of experience jostles the other, an intentional echo of the writer's struggle to describe the chaotic, while simultaneously attempting to find his own authorial voice. Thus Bao Ninh's work is half about war. If there is a message, it is that a survivor's reconciliation with savage memory is impossible--perhaps not the most original idea in war novels, but one worth hearing from the ex-enemy. Top Level of the Genre

This work is about the Vietnam war from a North Vietnamese soldier's point of view. It isn't particularly political, though it was banned in Vietnam for a time, perhaps still is, because it was critical of the war and of politics. A soldier's reflection on the atrocities of war and psychological damage war inflicts upon nations and upon the soldiers and citizens. Can a person or society ever heal from war? This, I believe is an important question asked by the question, and, as Roland Barthes proposes, "literature is the question minus the answer," and Bao Ninh's work is true to Barthes' proposal on this point.

I am loathe to provide spoilers, and for literary works, style is as much a part of the content as plot, so I suppose this is a spoiler of sorts: The plot is not presented in a linear way, but dislocates time, which is common in many Vietnam War novels. I imagine a masters or doctoral thesis can be performed on Vietnam War novels and the dislocation of time as a stylistic device. For this novel, however, it is an absolute necessity stylistically to produce the effect the novel builds to near the end, so stick with it if you have trouble with that approach to plot.

Well-written novel on the devastation of war

Mesmerizing and well-written love and war "memoir" of North Vietnamese soldier of the Vietnam war. The devastation and cruelties of war had robbed young lovebirds of their youth, their innocence, their happiness...and now they are left hardened-hearted, indifferent to vulnerable emotions, and incapable of being in love or feeling happy. The stories jumped around in timeline; however, the main character (Kien)'s memories were so vivid and many times visceral in his war experience: no mention of glory, victory or necessarily defeats but mostly the story-telling led through fates of the deaths and how those haunting souls never left Kien.

My favorite quotes:

"...hard to remember a time when his whole personality and character had been in tact, a time before the cruelty and the destruction of war had warped his soul. A time when he had been deeply in love, passionate aching with desire, hilariously frivolous and lighthearted...when he too was worthy of being a lover and in love...but war was a world with no home, no roof, no comforts. A miserable journey of endless drifting... War was also a world without romance. He couldn't avoid the drain on his soul, the ruin his young men were escaping from as they set about squeezing the last remaining drops of love from their nightly adventures."

Excellent, but not for the faint of heart

A first hand perspective on the Vietnam War that most Americans like myself have not heard. The book is based on the author's life before, during and just after his service in the North Vietnamese Army. Even Americans who served in the war and who are familiar with the experience of their South Vietnamese allies, they have likely not heard much of what the war was like for the soldiers on the other side. So much suffering occurred during this war, even for those who fought for the North and returned to their homes as heroes.

That being said, this was easily the most depressing book I have ever read. Bao Ninh spares nothing when describing the things he saw and experienced in combat and the heart wrenching pain of loss in his post-war life. Not for the faint of heart.

LOVED THIS BOOK !

Rochelle French has me completely hooked on her Meadowview Heat series. TRUSTING THE ONE is the second book in this series, and I loved it as much as I loved the FOREVER THE ONE! This author is now on my auto-buy list--she writes amazingly strong, complex, and passionate characters who face heart-wrenching situations, but there's still plenty of fun mixed in with the deep emotion. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Rochelle French is a great writer! She tells a lovely story of small town friends that are relatable and interesting. Each book follows characters that are present in all the books so that the continuity in the story makes in a pleasure to read. Her tales are full of passion and love . It is so enjoyable to read about how her character's lives unfold. I cannot wait to read the next one in the Meadowview Heat series.
