Great book for students!

As a recent graduate pursuing a career in architecture, I found this book incredibly informative. The breakdown of architecture positions, as well as architecture related fields is invaluable, and something I never really learned in college. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive overview of the architecture field, especially college students who are trying to narrow down their career path.

A Good Book For Beginners

I thought that Ryan had a lot of practical advice in his book. He tells you what you need to know to be successful in getting your foot in the door, and also how to advance once you do get your foot in the door. He also is frank about why people should be architects. He also doesn't pull any punches in regards to why you shouldn't be an architect as well. Very helpful.

About the Author
Peter Jones has been addicted to railways, and modelling them, for as long as he can remember. In 1949 he took his first hesitant steps in garden railways, in 16mm scale running on 0 gauge track. He began an apprenticeship in modelling that has led to his extensive work in the railway scene. Peter has written widely on the subject, including a long-running column in Garden Railway magazine. His previous book, Practical Garden Railways, was also published by Crowood in 2006. Peter has his own website at www.comptondown.co.uk.

thoroughly delightful

If you have ever seen a small steam locomotive in operation, found out that the owner built it, and thought "Gee, that looks like fun, but I could never do that..."....this book IS for you. Mr. Jones has an entertaining style, decades of experience, the ability to instruct, and a willingness to share. He also keeps you focused so that a project does not become overwhelming and unsatisfactory. Even if your plans are just dreams, you will gain much knowlege and appreciation as to what makes these little beauties go. Many fine pictures to keep your inspirations under a full head of steam!!!

Not for the complete beginner - but worth having.

If you have dabbled G scale and have some moderate machining, brazing, and silver soldering skills (and equipment), "Building Small Steam Locomotives: A Practical Guide to Making Engines for Garden Gauges", will fill your mind full of wonderful projects that you can accomplish in a few weekends and be very proud of. There-in also sits the only problem with this book. It addresses a very niche type of beginner. If you want to build the engines in Jones' book, you will need a desktop lathe and some practiced skill. Jones falls into the "Adobe Syndrome" a bit - the practice of introducing basic concepts at a beginner level, but then requiring skills beginners wouldn't typically have.

But I gave it four stars?

While Jones may have missed the mark in practically and applicability, he more than made up for it with an honest, entertaining, engaging and clear writing style. Couple that with excellent photography and "Building Small Steam Locomotives" is an inspiring read. While I may have doubt that most readers will actually build Jones' locomotives, I have little doubt that readers will enjoy this book, be happy to have it on the shelf, and move closer to actually building and modeling live steam G gauge. And it will influence the beginners choices in a positive manner.

I'm off to price lathes.

Oh - Jones does make an excellent recommendation that I believe adds immensely to his work. He suggest the reader first build a Ruby before really going on in the book. It's excellent advice. A Ruby is a live steam locomotive kit that can be assembled in a weekend by a novice. The process will teach even a complete beginner they logic, function and terminology of live steam systems. Plus, the Ruby can be the basis of a project from the book. Your favorite search internet engine can lead you to the Ruby.

I found this book not to be a complete step by step guide to building a particular steam engine, but is extraordinarily helpful in understanding how engines are built [ which is very easy ] and how to go about making an engine of your own design, which can easily be accomplished by going through the basics. Highly recommended for the handy home machinist.

Plot driven

Although these are typical superhero v. villain story, it is rare to see plot complexity that deals with the amalgam of human emotions that Peter Parker and Spider-Man confront in these 1960 issues. As a teenager he has to deal with feelings toward Betty Brant. He also has internal conflicts as he tries to combat crime and meet his responsibility toward aunt May. At the same time, he faces persecution from cops, JJJ's relentless bad press, and a public opinion that is at best divided in its trust on our hero. In spite of all this, Spider-Man deals with this persecution responsibly and with a positive psychology, always expecting that something good will come out of it.

These issues from 1965 and 1966 are also quite interesting because they bring up actual events into the story: the space race between the U.S. and the Soviets is mentioned in the stories about JJJ's asronaut son reappear. The draft for the Vietnam War is mentioned because Flash Thompson got a draft notice, providing another reason to pick on Peter Parker for not receiving one. Other cultural references like Jack Benny, Woody Allen, and the Lawrence Welk show are also made.

In these issues, Betty Brant makes up her mind to marry Ned Leeds, Peter Parker and the gang graduate, it appears that Liz Allen disappears because she doesn't go to college, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy also make their debut when Peter goes to college. Gwen Stacy seems to be attracted to Peter Parker and Harry Osborn initially dislikes Parker. Mary Jane Watson's cheerful and dynamic persona does add stamina to the Spider-Man stories. We also get to find out that the Green Goblin is Harry's father and the strenuous relationship between the two is shown here. The father-son relationship between the Osborns is also a faithful portrait of dysfunctional families, a topic that was becoming popular in the sixties. The generational differences is also illustrated in Aunt May's misunderstandings of Peter's slang. Spidey also joins Dr. Strange to fight a madman who tries to control e world through a magic wand; and he almost joins the Avengers. I think is last story, published in an annual, is quite weak for a strong lack of motive. Why do they suddenly become interested in him? How come the Dare Devil is not invited in? The story, however, reaffirms that Spider-Man is a loner, and fated to be on his own forever.

an enjoyable trip down memory lane......

I purchased this as a present for my grandson and ended up reading and enjoying it myself. This book brought back many childhood memories for me of carefree afternoons of reading adventures and comic book swapping with friends.

What a great and inexpensive way to regain your old comic book collection. I thought the black and white illistrations might take something away but it really doesn't. This is the second book in the series that I have purchased and would difinately recommend it to anyone looking for some nostalgia.

Publishing error: Issue #40 & #41 not present

I don't know about other customers, but my copy ordered from Amazon contains a publishing error.

Issue #40 (the continuation of issue #39 in which Spidy and the Green Goblin are supposed to be unmasked) stops after the first page, then skips to page 17 of issue #39. Upon reaching the the first page of issue #40 again, it skips to page 8 of issue #42. Issues #40 and #41 do not appear in this book.

If you're buying this to have on your shelf, that's fine, but if you're buying it to read, the climax is missing and this did not make for a very easy bedtime as I was reading it to my 7 year old son.

I would love to know if other customers had the same problem and how I can get a copy of issues #40-42.

UPDATE: I went to a physical bookstore and was able to get a copy of this book which did not have the publishing error. Changed review to 3 stars because it's a good book for the target market, but I'm leaving the review: online buyer beware! Some copies of this book have publishing errors which remove the climax from the book.
