Path blazing scientist/writer

Gamow was a respected nuclear physicist and cosmologist who could write for the general reader. When this book appeared, the nuclear age had recently dawned but few scientists were writing about nuclear and other fields of physics so that they could be understood by the layman. Even more importantly, he could write in a way that stimulated the interest of young minds who were influenced to pursue their own careers in science, at a time when the U.S. seemed to be lagging the Soviet Union in the space race. It's hard to imagine now the fear and anxiety that Sputnik and later Yuri Gagarin's flight inspired, by beating us into space with both the first orbital satellite and first human space flight.

In the 40s and 50s there weren't many high level scientists or talented science writers writing for the general public like there were in succeeding decades. A few, like Martin Gardner, Lincoln Barnett (The Universe and Dr. Einstein), Lancelot Hogben (Mathematics for the Million, and Science for the Citizen), come to mind. And Asimov's wonderful books were still many years in the future. Since there was so little available, I even read the popular works of the eminent French astronomer Camille Flammarion who died in 1925.

So I treasured books like this and read all that I could find. Along with the Life Nature and Life Science Library, they kindled an interest in science that led to studying science in college and later a career. If you read the other reviews here you'll see similar comments. You can't say more for a book than that not only did it open your mind to the wonders of science but that it was truly life changing.

Donald J. Sterling, Jr. has over 25 years of experience as a technical and ad copywriter in the areas of electronics and high technology. He has worked with AMP, Lucent Technologies, Agere Systems, ExceLight Communications, and other leaders in optical communications. Currently, Mr. Sterling is working for an advertising agency that deals with high technology. In addition to this book, he has also written related books, which include coverage of fibers in specific applications.

Mr. Chartrand holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Queen¿s university in Kingston Ontario. He has been teaching digital courses for 20 years at Niagara College in Welland , Ontario. Mr. Chartrand has made industry contributions with various designs including interfacing an infrared camera to a PC, creating a digital circuit board used as a PC training system, and designing a control pendant for an air-filled medical bed. He also worked as a plant engineer for General Motors.

Good Book

Purchase this for a class in fiber optics. This is an excellent book for explaining many aspects of fiber principles. The book also has some excellent explanations on other aspects of electronic principles. This is a keeper book not one to turn back in for a few bucks.

NO CD/ Not the real riffs

I gave it 3 stars because it didn't come with a CD and it was written in its description that it WILL COME with a CD. The only reason a bought a new one was the CD which it didn't come :\\\\\ Also the riffs are super super easy and they don't have the harder part of solos, like in Comfortably numb, there's only tab for the first part...also the tbs through the book mostly are for the vocal melodies and not the actual Pink Floyd guitar riffs!

Think "Nunn and Gulko meet the Slav."

I will start with a disclosure: I know and like the author and admire his play. At 414 pages "The Slav: Move by Move" might seem a behemoth but, there is lots of white space and an average approaching 1.5 diagrams per page. In fact, I could only find one full page of text (79) without a diagram. This is not a "see variation A1b2" opening manual, but rather more like Viktor Moskalenko's opening books (without the photos of players). What you do get is complete games, fully annotated, along with Cyrus' repertoire recommendations. (Hey, kids! Middlegame and endgame instruction from a GM-strength IM for free!) The material (pure Slav, transpositions to Semi-Slav positions are mentioned but not examined) is broken up into 9 chapters; the longest, Chapter One on the mainline Dutch, starting at move 8, is a monograph in itself at 94 pages. Though written from the perspective of a career practitioner of the Black side, there is plenty of gold to be mined for White and Cyrus does a good job of briefly presenting alternatives to his main choices for Black (and these include improvements over known theory.) Cyrus keeps the material interesting with his signature humorous conversational writing style. So, this is definitely not "The Slav in a Weekend" (note to John Emms--I want full credit if you use this idea for a book series) but, if you are interested in taking a bit more time to learn and understand the Slav and if you are interested in improving more than your opening play, then this is the book for you.

Enjoyable reading.

First, the book is beautiful and well sized. I bought through amazon and thought I would receive a much smaller book, nevertheless I got this big size book (bigger then I expected in all dimensions). The pages are well written, the ink is good too.

The content is very well distributed and covers the main lines that are played today. Unfortunately, the first player can change the move order and make more difficult for you to play dxc4. In this case, I recomend checking some positions in the database, because the book doesn't cover these lines.

Cyrus is a very funny writer, so I enjoy reading his annotations. The analysis can get deep sometimes, so don't expect to spend less than 40 minutes in each game (this book will take 1 year to be finished, at least), although if you are taking this thing seriously and want to analyze the game actively, it will not take less than 1h and half per game.

I bought all 3 books of this series and recomend them all (ruy lopez, slav and nizoindia). I am not in a hurry to read them because the focus of these books is not to put you on what is the most current lines (this book on the slav doesn't cover the variation where black plays a6 before taking on c4, for examploe) but to make you comprehend what positions you are reaching in the middle games and endgames when playing the pure slav.

I strongly recommend these books to improve your chess overrall (don't forget to go to chesstempo and study tactics every training day, because if you know anything in an opening but lose to that Knight fork in the endgame, then it is useless).

Each chapter ends with a very useful 'key points' section which condenses the foregoing comprehensive text into a few, well chosen 'bullet points' that are particularly useful for quick reference and reviewing the practical indications and efficacy of the investigative techniques. These are presented as separate sequential pages of clinical history, beautiful multiple sequence imaging, including playable movie cine studies, and then a separate page of image analysis with a pathological denouement, where appropriate.

Best clinical cardiac MR book

The structure of the book is convenient. It covers major topics in details. The chapters are well edited and there's no disturbing difference between them. The chapter about contrast materials written by Ni and Dymarkowski coveres the topic extensively. Cardiomyopathies are represented pretty well especially taking into account that it was published in 2005. Congenital heart diseases are also covered well. I haven't sensed significant vendor influence while reading the book.
Although time passes by and when it comes to cardiac MR - books can become outdated - but this one had kept its leading position. Especially if I take the softcover version, which may be even affordable for costumers from Eastern-Europe. Highly recomended for all clinicians before (or after) engaging in this field.
I'm definitely looking forward to see the next edition.

The best cardiac MRI book

I have looked at several cardiac MRI books and this is the best I have seen. Still a little wordy, but more practical than the other books out there.

Great cardiac MRI book!

This is the most comprehensive cardiac MR book you can have for the price. The book is fully loaded with pictures and the chapters are very detailed. The companion CD rom is somewhat difficult to play, but works even with Vista. Movie files are .mov and the cases are awesome.
