If you're just starting out this is NOT the best option.

Although this book does have allot of good info, several sections of this book are full of pretty pictures without much application to the average home knife builder.
I'll start with the less useful info in the book.
The first chapter leads off with a guy using an EDM machine(electric discharge machining) to begin making his knives, as the process goes on he uses a milling machine to do some of the other work, since I doubt anyone other than the most dedicated knife makers are going to have, or plan to ever purchase, that sort of equipment, it would have been better to see how to do these steps using more common tools and equipment. They were great looking knives but not much info a person could actually apply even in a well equipped home workshop.
The third section makes no sense to me why it was even included, other than maybe to show how production shops used to make knives back in the 80's, it involves using a pantograph machine and making patterns for it. Since pantographs are used to make multiple copies of the same parts, and are obsolete(not very good if you are going into production these days), this really is of no use to a person actually trying to build their own knives.
Another section in the book is about creating steel from raw materials and smelting. Although very interesting, once again not allot of application for the knife builder or anyone else who is not already very experienced in knife making.
This book does have some good sections on basic knife design as well as some good info on casting guards and pommels, overall, I'd say about 1/2 to 2/3 of this book is actually useful.
Even though this book has better pictures, for a person just starting out I would recommend getting this instead How to Make Knives

Better books available

The pictures are B & W, and aren't even particularly good B & W. David Boye's book is better and more detailed, as are several others. I know Loveless is a legend as a knife maker, but that doesn't have any impact on his written work. OK to buy as a historical document but there are better first books if you want to learn to be a knife maker.

There are plenty of books for beginners, but this is not one. There are not a lot of great books for more obscure and advanced methods, but this is one.

To my knowledge there are no other books on using a pantograph for knife making.

Take it for what it's worth.

The book begins with a discussion of the Einstein/Debye model of specific heat, and the Drude/Sommerfeld theories of electrons in solids, which can all be understood without reference to any underlying crystal structure. The failures of these theories force a more serious investigation of microscopics. Many of the key ideas about waves in solids are then introduced using one dimensional models in order to convey concepts without getting bogged down with details. Only then does the book turn to consider real materials.

Chemical bonding is introduced and then atoms can be bonded together to crystal structures and reciprocal space results. Diffraction experiments, as the central application of these ideas, are discussed in great detail. From there, the connection is made to electron wave diffraction in solids and how it results in electronic band structure. The natural culmination of this thread is the triumph of semiconductor physics and devices.

The final section of the book considers magnetism in order to discuss a range of deeper concepts. The failures of band theory due to electron interaction, spontaneous magnetic orders, and mean field theories are presented well. Finally, the book gives a brief exposition of the Hubbard model that undergraduates can understand.

The book presents all of this material in a clear fashion, dense with explanatory or just plain entertaining footnotes. This may be the best introductory book for learning solid state physics. It is certainly the most fun to read.

About the Author

Steven H. Simon, Professor of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Department of Physics, University of Oxford, and Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford.

Professor Steven Simon earned a BSc degree from Brown in Physics & Mathematics in 1989 and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Harvard in 1995. Following a two-year post-doc at MIT, he joined Bell Labs, where he was a director of research for nine years. He is currently Professor of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford.

His research is in the area of condensed matter physics and communication, including subjects ranging from microwave propagation to high temperature superconductivity. He is interested in quantum effects and how they are manifested in phases of matter. He has recently been studying phases of matter known as "topological phases" that are invariant under smooth deformations of space-time. He is also interested in whether such phases of matter can be used for quantum information processing and quantum computation.

Great Introductory Text For Solid State Physics

I tried to prepare for my first solid state physics course using Kittel and Ashcroft/Mermin. They are both OK books but their method of teaching the subject is not very intuitive. I found myself lost between the huge gaps in their derivations. Simon talks you through each section; it reads very much like a lecture. After reading this book, the other two books made a lot more sense. I highly suggest reading this book first, though. I had so many misunderstandings from the other two books that I had to unlearn a lot of things. The best part is that Simon actually tells you chapters in the other books to read further if you want more than an introduction to the specific topic at hand. I wanted to give this book 4.5 stars but Amazon has quantized the stars to whole integers. The reason I wanted to take off a half star is because of the jumps in derivations. Unfortunately, in upper division physics, almost all texts do this, some more than others. While I wish he would work out some example problems and not make giant leaps in derivations, it wasn't worth a whole point deduction. Hands down best introductory Solid State Physics textbook.

Great Introductory Solid State

This is a great introductory level solid state book. I really appreciate the humor and the way the content is presented as in a story book. Definitely not your typical boring textbook. I've recommended it to my student and they all appreciated its crystal clear explanations. It is not too heavy in math but the physics is flawless. An amazing resource I will recommend for a Solid State Course.

Robert van den Nieuwendijk Robert van den Nieuwendijk is an IT veteran from the Netherlands with over thirty years of experience in Information Technology. He holds a bachelor degree in software engineering. After working a few years as a programmer of air traffic control and vessel traffic management systems, he started his own company Van den Nieuwendijk Informatica in 1988. Since then he has worked as a freelance systems administrator of OpenVMS, Windows Server, Linux, and VMware vSphere systems, for Dutch governmental organizations and cloud providers. During winter he is also a ski and snowboard instructor at an indoor ski school. What this book does not do is teach you litterally everything about PowerCLI and how to use it. However it will get you started on PowerCLI using clear examples and exersizes. What better way than learning a new skillset than by actually putting it to use?

Needs better use of the language such as English

I've been making Excel models on and off for almost 20 years. I've wished for someone to write this book badly. And now someone has!

It would be difficult to overstate the violence this book does to the English language. But I'll say this: I now have a handy rejoinder to anyone who ever claims that the Americans are killing the language. The author, Alastair Day, is from the U.K.

The net result: This book is impossible to read. It's ironic, since the entire book is geared toward helping us make our Excel presentations more, well, presentable; the author seems to have a decent understanding of how to lay out data in an attractive, informative way. Yet the book itself is rambling, vague, imprecise, confusing, and ultimately pointless.

With mangled sentences on every page, no single example can suffice, but here's one anyway:

"Another feature is the sign for the cash flows. You make fewer errors if you consider money out to be negative and money in to be positive. It means that you never have to add cash flows rather than inserting more complex positive and negative statements. In this example, the depreciation is negative in the workings; however, the expenditure saves tax so this is positive."

You might think that this makes more sense in context. I assure you: There is no context.

The book needs an editor.

Very Difficult Read and hard to follow examples

I would not recommend this book because it was very difficult to follow the examples demonstrated in the book. The author jumps around frequently and does not lay out the examples in step by step format.

I have been using Excel VBA for 10+ years and still could not figure out how most of these examples were put together.

Nice Sheets but Impossible to find out How to Create it?

This is the kind of book that will give you hard time trying to find out how the author really built the model. I felt the author is so proud of his work that he kept for himself the details of building the sheets but unfortunately this is what any reader would look for in any financial modeling book. I would never recommend this book for any serious person looking for a detailed book in financial modeling.

I gave the book two stars because I copied the sheets in the CD, built it again from scratch, used some of the formulas to save time in building my model which in fact gave me longer time but helped in a way or another to achieve my objective.

It does the job

Frankly, this textbook surprised both my son and myself. It is a well-written and engaging science book. I bought it for my son to read as a refresher before taking the 8th grade STAR test. It did the job very well - he got 100% in two of the four areas, and nothing below a 90% in the other two. We did not use the lab books or answer questions, but looking at them, they seemed OK. The book has two major problems, neither of which are the fault of the publisher as much as the requirements of the State of California. First, it continually references the 8th grade science standard by number in the text, and secondly, it tries too hard to relate every topic to everyday life. Other than that, it is a fine, up-to-date textbook that engages the student both mentally and (if you use the labs) physically.

If you need a California-approved 8th grade science book, this is the one to get.
