first resampling book dedicated to dependent data

Books on the bootstrap and other resampling methods with a strong theoretical basis haven't appeared since 1999. So in 2003 this was a very welcome addition to the texts on resampling. It begins with a very good review of the bootstrap in the independent case. Then it goes on to give a delailed and thorough account of the dependent data case. Other books Davison and Hinkley (1997) and Chernick (1999) covered bootstrapping for time series and regression. However Lahiri, covers the block bootstrap and other methods for other types of dependencies as well. Also Professor Lahiri has made his own significant contributions to the research in resampling for dependent data and covers that important work very clearly in this book. It is because of the current nature of the theoretical and applied results covered in this book that I have cited it quite heavily in the second edition of my book Chernick (2007) that was just published.

Excellent source for learning...a must-have book!

First of all, I'm not a statistician. I'm an elect. engineer who needed to understand and employ resampling techniques for innovative research in my area. I started by scouring through published literature in journals and came across many of Prof. Lahiri's works. He is a recognized expert with many of his seminal papers cited by numerous times by his peers.

I then stumbled across this book. This book is the most comprehensive book I found on this subject. It covers almost all the main ideas that were developed in the last two decades. I believe it is exceptionally well written and more importantly well organized. He starts of by covering the basics and gradually moves the discussion to more advanced topics. He does so precisely in the manner in which a critical thought-process would lead.

My only suggestion for improvement in subsequent edition would be to provide a companion software (written in Matlab and/or R) to go along with many of the techniques discussed in the book. This would further aid the understanding as there is no better way to learn than implementing the algorithms.

A handsome greyhound

Very helpful guide

This book has been very helpful for planning my trip! I especially like the tips on etiquette. I always like seeing how other people rate their favorite places along with an explanation so I can decide if those are things that interest me. The descriptions are very detailed and offer lots of good information. The organization of the book throws me off a little, I feel like it jumps around quite a bit in the beginning before it gets to the chapters on each area, but overall it has been an excellent resource.
I appreciate the information on the 2015 earthquake damage. Even though the reconstruction is an ongoing process and hard to describe accurately in print, the suggestions that we check the status of certain places before we plan a trip there are very helpful.

Not Impressed at all. The binding is crap and it's the picture on Amazon is a lot taller than this short little book. Not to mention some of the Misolanous Material from the 1974 edition including liber pyramidos the self initiation right Crowley wrote for solitary A.A students. I am going to save up 100$ to buy 1974 edition so I can show people why the Purist are sometimes right

portability

Most thorough and (most importantly) portable alternative to an Equinox set available. There are a few key articles missing (most importantly I think is "The Soldier and the Hunchback", as well as "John St. John") but those can thankfully be found online. If you can't afford the enormous chunk of change to buy the full Equinox set and you're like me and you can only tolerate online editions so far, it's great.

Classic Crowley, not for beginners.

I'm assuming you are looking to learn/practice magic if you are wanting to read this book. One should know that all this material is available online, but I purchased this book as I can't stand digital copies of material like this. I prefer to actually have the text.

This book is not for a beginner to magic. Read Donald Michael Kraig's Modern Magick first if you are just starting. My aspirations could be different than many, so the context of this book really doesn't help me.

That being said, if you are interested in following Crowley's teachings or his writings, get this book.. You're going to find a minimum explanation for the topics listed: yoga, meditation, assumption of god forms, basic rituals, enochian, etc.. This book should be used as a reference (that's how I use it), instead of a step-by-step guide of magical practice. You will get many of the hymns, poems, etc about the Thelema Pantheon (which I honestly am still learning). It's instructions and meanings are different when you actually practice, rather than an armchair occultist.

Good for the heart and soul.

I met Radhanath Swami over 30 years ago. He ran a "Krishna House" in Athens, Ohio.
He always had a wonderful way of making spiritual truth understandable. Even as a young college
student, I could see that his level of spiritual enlightenment was far beyond that of the people that he
worked for in W.Va. It does my soul good to read this book, almost like speaking with him 30 years ago.

Emotional yet hopeful…

Abuse is such an ugly topic yet when a survivor comes out stronger than before, surrounded by people who support and encourage, there couldn’t be a better testament to the human spirit. This story touches on so many emotions – from anger and ugliness to selflessness and love – and does it in a way that had me glued to every conversation, every reflection, every feeling.

Payton Walters could be the poster child for survival. The early scenes had me crying with her as she endured so much. Betrayed by those who should have protected her the most she managed to emerge healthy and strong with the help of those who truly loved her. Dylan appointed himself her champion early on but she wanted so much more from him.

“…I’ve loved you for years.”
“That’s good, because even if you didn’t I would have kept showing you reasons you should.”

At the heart of it, I liked these characters. They were young, and you could see that in some of the choices made and conversations not had, but I wanted them to work. Payton had gone through a lot and came out forever changed from her experiences. Dylan was sexy, oh my yes, but the way he loved Payton, his family, made him that much more everything.

With her words, the author invited me along for the journey, to savour and enjoy, and I did both!

Hello mixed emotions
Dylan, oh how i loved you and wanted to punch you in the face all at the same time. It took you awhile and some slip ups to finally see where you belonged but when you did, you were every girls dream. When it comes to a girl like Payton, who has been through more than one person should have to, a strong willed man like Dylan is a must!!

The story line for me was a little bit predictable, well written and kept me interested but predictable. Reading about Payton's particular situation was heartbreaking to me and at the same time makes a person appreciate a certain type of upbringing. When she finally broke free of her situation things kind of went flat line for me it just kind of dragged on between the back and forth of the relationship. I love how other characters showed back up and threw a twist into the story line (every book needs a good twist) that had to be the most appealing part in the story to me.

Payton + Dylan = a happy me! This story follows Payton's hardships that she tries to overcome throughout her young adulthood. The writing is enjoyable and the story is full of twists and turns.
The romance softens the story so the harshness isn't too overwhelming.
I hope others enjoy this as much as I did!

Space marines get cheaper in points each codex. GW wants you to buy more and more models for that army of yours lol.

Great - the sixth edition 'dex, +1.

This book is the current (as of June 2015) rule set for the "Space Marine" faction of a table top game. There are some very nice set photos inside, as well as the required rules. The price is comparable to a text book, but most SM players will put more hours into this than one of those, so it is what it is. There's the usual day one cry for FAQs from GW's sloppy writing, but that's also par for the course.

Now for players:
The enemies of the Imperium shall be crushed by the weight of this new codex! Or at least by the Grav Cannon toting troop choices. Calgar got a slight buff with at initiative power fists but huge nerf, losing his "Pass/Fail - you pick" leadership buff. Shrike can't infiltrate DT LR's now either. Everything else got a buff, a point reduction or both. As of today, this is the most broken/OP combo eligible 'dex in the game - especially with the Skyhammer Annihlation formation from the web - like tabling 5 WK in turn one OP. Balance aside, it looks to be a fun ride from your free double demi company rhinos and razorback metahl bawkses!

The risks of such poetry are a lapse into moral sensationalism, the poet's narcissistic fear of irrelevance in light of earlier suffering, or a ghoulish fascination with horror devoid of intellectual substance. Gubar explains how poets avoid these risks and speak on behalf of the dead without usurping their place. A reading of Adrienne Rich's use of Holocaust metaphors is particularly astute, and Gubar's commentary on Jacqueline Osherow, Anthony Hecht, and Irving Feldman shows how the aesthetic can be used to intensify "moral, intellectual, and sensory awareness" of an event that continues to haunt contemporary politics, culture, and art. Still the standard text

You understand topos theory when you understand this book. I cannot say the same of any other.
Mac Lane and Moerdijk SHEAVES IN GEOMETRY AND LOGIC is a beautifully written book, a long and well motivated book packed with well chosen clearly explained examples. Both those authors have a rare gift for conveying an insider's view of the subject from the start. My own book ELEMENTARY CATEGORIES, ELEMENTARY TOPOSES goes quickly and simply to the key ideas (if I say so myself). Barr and Wells TOPOSES, TRIPLES, AND THEORIES uses the most efficient tools to get at the central theorems.
But no other book goes as concisely and comprehensively to all the aspects of toposes as this one. Category theory, algebra, logic, arithmetic, geometry, and cohomology all come in, in a well chosen perspective. This book is hard to read in places, especially at the start. It cannot serve alone as an introduction unless you are really gifted. But it remains the best single text on the subject.
Johnstone has a three-volume set on the current state of topos theory due to appear later this year. It may well become the standard reference. But it will not replace this book.

This book, printed in 1978, is still an essential, I would say, unavoidable, part of a toposopher education. You have to read it right after S. MacLane's "Categories for the Working Mathematician". I have read the book three times.
