MLAPP and other machine learning textbooks

* Perspective: My perspective is that of a machine learning researcher and student, who has used these books for reference and study, but not as classroom textbooks.

* Audience/prerequisites: they are comparable among all the textbooks mentioned. BRML has lower expected commitment and specialization, PGM requires more scrupulous reading. The books differ in their topics and disciplinary approach, some more statistical (ESL), some more Bayesian (PRML, ITILA), some focused on graphical models (PGM, BRML). K Murphy compares MLAPP to others here. For detailed coverage comparison, read the table of contents on the book websites.

* Main strength: MLAPP stands out for covering more advanced and current research topics: there is a full chapter on Latent Dirichlet Allocation, learning to rank, L1 regularization, deep networks; in the basics, the decision theory part is quite thorough (e.g. will mention Jeffrey's/uninformative priors). The book is "open" and vivid, doesn't shy away from current research and advanced concepts. This seems to be purposeful, as it shows in many aspects:

- quotes liberally from web sources, something usually not done in academic publications

- borrows "the best" from other authors (always with permission and acknowledgment, of course): most importantly the best pictures and diagrams, but also tables, recaps, insightful diagrams. Whereas other books will produce their own pictures and diagrams themselves (eg, PRML has a distinctive clarity and style in its illustrations), MLAPP takes many of its colour illustrations from other people's publications; therefore it can select the most pithy and relevant pictures to make a point. You could think that reproductions may be illegible and require extra effort to interpret because they come from a variety of sources; I have found that the bonus coming from having precisely the right image prevails.

- frequent references to the literature, mentions of extensions and open questions, as well as computational complexity considerations: for instance, the section on HMMs will mention duration modeling and variable-duration Markov models, and a comparison of the expressive power of hierarchical HMMs versus stochastic context-free grammars, complete with relevant citations, and a brief mention of the computational complexity results from the publications. All this connects the material with research and new ideas in a fine way -- which other textbooks don't achieve, I find. For instance, PGM defers references to a literature section at the end of each chapter, resulting in a more self-contained, but more poorly "linked" text.

* Didactic aids: Another distinctive feature is that the author clearly has tried to include didactic aids gathered over the years, such as recaps, comparative tables, diagrams, much in the spirit of the "generative model of generative models" (Roweis and Ghahramani): e.g. table comparing all models discussed, pros and cons of generative vs. discriminative models, recap of operations on HMMs (smoothing, filtering etc), list of parameter estimation methods for CRFs.

* Editorial features: Other editorial features worth mentioning are

- compared to others, helpful mentions of terminology, e.g. jargon, nomenclature, concept names, in bold throughout the text ("you could also devise a variant thus; this is called so-and-so")

- mathematical notation relatively clear and consistent, occasional obscurities. PGM stands out as excruciatingly precise on this aspect.

- boxes/layout: no "skill boxes" or "case study boxes" (PGM), not many roadmap/difficulty indications like ITILA or PGM, examples are present but woven into the text (not separated like PGM or BRML). Layout rather plain and homogeneous, much like PRML.

- sadly lacks list of figures and tables, but has index of code

* Complete accompanying material:

- interesting exercises (yet fewer than PRML, BRML, PGM); solutions, however, are only accessible to instructors (same with BRML, PGM), which in my experience makes them only half as useful for the self-learner. PRML and ITILA have some solutions online resp. in the book.

- accompanying Matlab/Octave source code, which I found more readily usable than BRML's. PGM and PRML have no accompanying source code, even though the toolkit distributed with Koller's online PGM class might qualify as one. I find accompanying code a truly useful tool for learning; there's nothing like trying to implement an algorithm, checking your implementation against a reference, having boilerplate/utility code for the parts of the algorithm you're not interested in re-implementing. Also, code may clarify an algorithm, even when presented in pseudo-code. By the way, MLAPP has rather few pseudo-code boxes (like BRML or PRML, while PGM is very good here).

- MLAPP is not freely available as a PDF (unlike BRML, closest topic-wise, ESL, or ITILA). This will no doubt reduce its diffusion. My own take on the underlying controversy is in favor of distributing the PDF: makes successful books widely popular and cited (think ITILA or Rasmussen and Williams' Gaussian Processes), increases the book's overall value, equips readers with a weightless copy to annotate with e-ink, or consult on the go. I believe PDF versions positively impact sales, too: impact neutral-to-positive to course textbook/university library sales, indifferent to sales in countries with widely different purchase power, positive to all other segments due to enormous diffusion/popularity.

* Conclusion:
The closest contender to this book I believe is BRML. Both are excellent textbooks and have accompanying source code.

BRML is more accessible, has a free PDF version, and a stronger focus on graphical models.
MLAPP has all the qualities of an excellent graduate textbook (unified presentation, valuable learning aids), and yet is unafraid of discussing detail points (e.g. omnipresent results on complexity), as well as advanced and research topics (LDA, L1 regularization).

Consider Other Options Before Purchasing.

I'm sure if you are a Google Research Scientist and are not learning the material for the first time, this book is amazing. For everyone else, I would not recommend it. I bought this book for my Fall 2013 COMPSCI 571 class, and I regret it. Before buying this book, consider the following:

1. Take a look at the online Errata. This book is already in it's 3rd printing and it just came out. The list of corrections for this (the 3rd edition) is already mind-numbingly long. The 4th printing coming out this month will surely fix some errors, but there are just too many.
2. Our class has an online forum (for a 100 person class) where we discuss topics, and most questions are either (a) basic topics from the book that no one understood or (b) talking about how one figure in the book has multiple errors associated with it. At first I was really excited to find mistakes and submit them to the Errata - it was like I was part of the book! Now I just get frustrated and have already given up on submitting corrections.
3. Our instructor regrets using this book and modifies the examples before giving them to us in class. Our out of class readings now consist mostly of MetaAcademy.com.
4. There are hardly any worked-through examples, and many of those that are worked through have errors.
5. Many important concepts are skimmed over way too quickly. For example, there is a whole chapter on Logistic regression. However, Logistic regression is covered for exactly 2 pages. Then a weird 3D graph is presented but not explained (a common theme throughout the book is graphs that look absolutely amazing, but which convey little information as to exactly what's going on to a lay-person like me), then the rest of the chapter presents methods for doing the math, which I'm sure are useful in some sense, but I'm still thinking: "why is this MLE not in closed form, what is a Hessian doing here... and wtf is going on?!"

Most students just got the PDF for free online, and I would highly suggest doing something other than paying $55 for this book.

Other classic machine learning textbooks, if you have more time:
1. Pattern Recognition And Machine Learning (The first book I read on Machine Learning. Very accessible. More detailed than Yasir's book, but less than Kevin's book)
2. The Nature of Statistical Learning Theory (Information Science and Statistics) by Vapnik (One of the pioneer in this field. Extremely theoretical approach)
3. Elements of Statistical Learning - Hastie et al (free pdf copy available)

About the Author

Scott Powers holds the title of distinguished professor, and is also director of the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida. He has been teaching for over 20 years, and was named Teacher of the Year at UF in 1992. Scott served as president of the Southeastern Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1986, and is the co-author of another textbook, Exercise Physiology, 6th edition, published by McGraw-Hill. As a member of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) Sports Medicine Review Board and the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Physiology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the International Journal of Sports Medicine, and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, he is a well-known and highly respected individual in the field of exercise physiology.

Stephen Dodd is the Chair of the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. Not your father's mythology

Another excellent book from Stephannie Beman. Loving the Goddess of Love follows Aphrodite and what happens when Zeus orders her to marry his son Hephaestus,the smith of the gods. A short, stocky god whose scarred body and limping walk makes most Gods turn away, Hephaestus doesn't understand why he has been given the "Goddess of Love" for his wife - and he doesn't trust anything about the arrangement; not even Aphrodite herself. Especially when he can tell that she's holding something back. Little does he know that the information she withholds isn't by her choosing - she is forbidden by dark magic.

Though you don't *need* to read My Lord Hades first in order to understand the events of this book, I do think it helps as Persephone and Hades make minor appearances. There is also a short story, Love is Blind, whose events intertwine with this book, though again it's not necessary for the reader to have read it, it just enriches the experience.

I won't lie, I love ms. Beman's stories because she's finally out the sex and the romance back into the mythologies and, though she has made changes to things such as family lineage, I find her changes enhance the stories rather than taking away from them.

Good story to read in the afternoon.

The story was enjoyable and kept to the general outline of the old Greek myths. I did like how Zeus behaved as a character. It was believable to have him be so thoughtless of people around him, to underappricate the ones who did him a service or a favor and to use one character in the story in order to appease another character whenever he was in jam or because it was easy. The Goddess of Love did not have an easy journey to get her man but it was a plausable story. The main villian did get it in the end but for the last few years Chronos has been the bad guy in the retelling of the Greek myths and each time he is just a little different and evil in its own way.

Next I would like to see Rhea's story as to how she married him and why she had to protect her children from a bad father. dac in ct

A new spin on mythology

I really enjoyed the book. It was a little confusing if you are familiar with the "family tree" of the gods and goddesses but i thought it was an interesting way to look at Mt. Olympus.
I feel in love with the characters. Definitely not a children mythology story.

Susan Nolen-Hoeksema (1959–2013) In January 2013 we lost our esteemed author and friend, Susan Nolen-Hoeksema. Susan was a renowned scholar, teacher, mentor, and academic leader. She was recognized internationally for her work on how people regulate their feelings and emotions and how particular patterns of thinking can make people vulnerable to and recover slowly from emotional problems, especially depression. Her research shaped the field’s perspective on depression in women and girls, and countless empirical studies and theoretical contributions followed as she developed her groundbreaking theory of rumination and depression. In her words: “My career has focused on two parallel goals. The first is to use empirical methods to address important social and mental health problems (depression, rumination, women’s mental health). The second goal is to disseminate psychological science. I also believe in taking science to the public, through my textbook on Abnormal Psychology and books for the general public on women’s mental health.” Susan taught at Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and Yale University.Susan’s work focused on depression, mood-regulation, and gender, for which she was recognized and received the David Shakow Early Career Award from Division 12, the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Committee on Women of American Psychological Association, the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science, a Research Career Award, and multiple grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. In addition, she was the founding editor of the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, now the most highly cited journal in the field of clinical psychology. Great textbook for a great class!

This is actually a really interesting textbook. If you are looking at reviews of the book to decide if you should take a class on abnormal psychology, go for it! It is one of the most interesting psychology classes you can take! I actually really enjoyed the readings out of this book, which is not the norm for required readings.

I am little bothered that I rented this book instead of purchased it, it has a ton of information and the author presents it in away that you're able to explain the material to a friend or coworker .You can't go wrong with this book it will make the Abnormal Psychology class a class that you will actually want to attend.

Review from a machinist

I am a field machinist / industrial mechanic. I fabricate parts in machine shops, I install and align different machine parts. I also maintain machine parts by checking parts to dimension tolerances. The 4th edition (2007) of this book I bought to stay current with modern tools as the tools during my apprenticeship from over 25 years ago have changed since then. I appreciate very much the explanations of the different tool types and the advantages and disadvantages of the different tool types. This book shows most of the tool types currently commercially available (and company names on the pictures is helpful too). Of course some rare custom made tools are not shown or some rare newer tool types. But compared to other books on measuring gages this is the best book I have every seen on the subject. I highly recommend it.

An excellent reference book.....

This book has saved my bacon in disputes with customers. It is highly technical, but is intended for technicians and engineers. If you are not ready to understand the concepts, this is not for you. However, if you are a technical/professional type, by all means get this book. You will not regret it.

More of an encyclopedia of dimensional measurement than a handbook of techniques

This book is a little bit better than some others on this subject, but the information density and usefulness per page is still pretty low. Like many of these "style" of technical books, it is filled with black and white photos of really old equipment (50+ years). It tries to cover a really broad range of metrology and measurement methods and equipment and in doing so has minimal depth in areas that would be broadly practical to a wide range users of basic measurement techniques and methodologies.

There are pages dedicated to showing how some 60's or 70's piece of specialized equipment works. Equipment that would be in a Fortune 500 company, um back in the day. Those companies would now have completely computerized equipment with laser scanning capability, while the rest of us are trying to check increasingly sophisticated components with what are still the basic tools, albeit updated with digital readouts.

This would be a much better book if it focused on good practices, set up and use of more commonly available tools, digital calipers and micrometers, gage pins, gage blocks, sine bars/plates, test indicators, go no-go gauges, surface plate work, squares, etc. When to worry about temperature effects, cleanliness and operator error or variation from user to user.

This is much more of an encyclopedia of metrology technology that what I would consider a "handbook" of dimensional measurement.

I’m obsessed with this baking book

I’m obsessed with this baking book.
If you’re a baker I truly recommend this book, there are easy and advance recipes. I have over a hundred baking and cookbooks and even more than that in magazines, I have so many that just as soon as my daughter noticed the new book the first words that came out of her mouth was “Mom, another freaking cookbook?” Yep! Lol.

I’ve baked a couple of cakes, several bread recipes including muffins and scones and have been pleased with them all. I especially love the sourdough starter and the cream biscuits are my daughter’s favorite. The only downside is there are not that many cookie or pie recipes.

The majority of each recipe in the book gets one full page image so you get a good look at what you are going to bake. Recipes are easy to follow and the book is very large which is great for us that are older and now hard of seeing LOL.

Incredibly Good Book on Nutrition with Diet Tips Added

THe book is 256 pages long and it takes the form of Dr. Reuban's previous sex books (Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.etc). A person basically asks a questions in bold headings and he answers it with a wide variet of wit and style. It feels just like Dr. Reuban is right there talking to you the person.
The book premise is very simple. The majority of the things the media tells us is wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that he tells us that much of our diseases and troubles involving the body (cancer, diabetes,etc) can be prevented if we simply take the precautinos he tells us in this book. His diet, or what you can do to be healthy can be summed up in one sentence:Eat food in their natural form, these being fruits and vegetables, and other forms of food in their natural form. He rants on the FDA and The Food Industry. He makes the Food Industry into monsters.
The book is good. Very good in fact that I gave it five stars for I totally agree with the premise that the main thing causing for Americans, including me, to become unhealthy is simply the additives and preservatives added. Reuban goes on to say that the chemicals found in our food cause cancer and even sperm count. He also says in the book that the reason non-industrialized countries like Georgia have much less of cancer and diabetes is because their food is natural.
To sum up his diet: Eat things in their natural form regardless of the fat. Don't buy food where the ingrediants are unpronunciable. Don't buy refined sugar, or enriched bread. Don't drink soda. I recommend you also get his other book: The Save-Your-Life Diet. Don't worry if its out of print. It can probaby be found in a used book store.

A truth-packed book with facts & no fiction about nutrition.

I read Dr. Reuben's book 20 years ago to answer some questions I had about the big vitamin fad that was happening. Unfortunately, I did not read his book in its entirety, but got the answers I was searching for - - mainly that I did not need suppliments, but that a year's supply of vitamins would fill a thimble. Today I am in a nutritional Ph.d. program, and thought I should revisit Dr. Reuben's book. I could not put the book down. It has humor and an honest approach to a subject that it is impossible to find the truth because everyone wants a piece of my pocketbook! I laughed, I cried in horror at the things I read. I am grateful that Dr. Reuben was brave enough to tell the Emerior he had no clothes. You will regret NOT reading this book!

The author is a proponent of the health food diet regimen.
He recommends not to consume junk food in order to minimize vitamin deficiencies. The work explains the following about
vitamins, cooking and canning:
o 30% of vitamins are lost in cooking/canning
o 25% of the vitamin content is lost in sterilization
o 27% of vitamins are lost in sterilization
o 12% is lost when you heat the contents of a can
In addition, the book promotes Vitamin B. Fried liver provides
vitamin A. Lemon juice is a good source of the vitamin C.
Brewer's yeast and B12 magnifies the B 12 vitamin. He explains
that natural vitamins are better than synthetic vitamins.
Soil impacts vitamins. Too much iron can produce fatal E-coli
whereas too little dietary vitamin can result in general lethargy. Dietary iron is in meat, whole wheat and whole bran.
This book is an excellent value for any health professional
or enthusiast.
