About the Author
Dr. Michelle "Shelley" McGuire teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles, and specializes in the research of understanding of how breastfeeding and lactation influence both maternal and child health and well-being. Recent research has focused on investigating how maternal diet influences milk fat content and, thus, energy intake and fatty acid consumption of the breastfeeding child. Dr. McGuire has been teaching the basic nutrition course for several years and has a strong appreciation of the course, its goals and objectives, and the variety of student needs. This experience coupled with her strong writing and research background has helped her create an exciting and refreshing text for the introductory nutrition course.

Dr. Beerman teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. The author of several published articles, she specializes in research focusing on dietary practices of college students and the effects of isoflavones on health parameters in postmenopausal women. Dr. Beerman also has published several articles accessing the effectiveness of computer technology in the college classroom. Dr. Beerman teaches the introductory nutrition course for health majors, as well as courses in nutrition education, life cycle nutrition, and pathophysiology. Since joining the faculty at Washington State University in 1989, she has taught more than 10,000 students and has been the recipient of several teaching awards. Dr. Beerman's years of teaching experience, combined with her wide knowledge base in nutrition and health sciences, has helped create this innovative introductory nutrition text.

This book is very informative, easy to read, and an overall good source to have for Nutrition majors, or those interested in studying the subject. The layout is organized with many diagrams, graphs and tables which help out a lot.

Book gives a good overview of the science behind nutrition. Way better then other books I have purchased. Contains interesting case studies that allow one to read about how nutritional intervention can help and also how nutrition plays into many diseases/conditions. Wasn't too difficult to read, lots of pictures definitely helped. Overall, an excellent introductory text to nutritional science.

Very useful book.

I bought this book for class and I would say it really helps a lot in a way that it gives more explanations and more details about things that are not discussed in class. Because usually teachers do require reading and details that are not covered in class would still be on the test. And, some teachers do not explain some things very well, so reading this book helps in understanding the theory.

The History behind the History

There are a number of books about the history of Walt Disney World and it's attractions. You can read these and find when Pirates of the Caribbean first went in , how long the ride is, what was Walt's involvement, how the attraction changed, etc. This nice little book by neophyte author Andrew Kiste covers all that- but more. See Andy (is it OK if I call you that Mr. Kiste?) is a History teacher, so not only do we get the history of the attraction or park, we get the history behind the history. So, for example, when Andy covers The Jungle Cruise we get the usual tidbit that Walt originally wanted it to have live animals (who'd be sleeping during the day), but also a little history of Colonial Africa, a mention of Heart of Darkness, African Queen and The African Lion- all sources for this wonderful attraction.

When A Historical Tour of Walt Disney World: Volume 1 ( and I am really looking forward to Volume 2!) covers Pirates of the Caribbean, is also mentions a few historical inaccuracies of that E Ticket ride. We also get the Crystal Palace, Main Street, the Enchanted Tiki Room, the Carousel of Progress, and Tomorrowland.

And so forth. Again, Bob McLain and his little independent Theme Park Press has brought a new author and a great book for Disney aficionados.

A great read for those sick of the same old recycled

A great read for those sick of the same old recycled, rehashed reviews of Disney World. Rather than being yet one more book detailing the history of the construction of the theme park, this book details the actual history that influenced imagineers as they designed the iconic attractions highlighted in the book (and yes, previous reviewer, it's imagineers). The book not only gave me a new perspective on various attractions but, better yet, it made the history behind them relevant and interesting. The author obviously loves Disney and loves history and combines the two into a fascinating (and very in-depth) study. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're a Disney fanatic hungry for something new.

Imagine a tour given by a history teacher

Instead of the typical 20-something tour guide, speaking from a pre-approved script, imagine a tour given by a history teacher. You learn the history that is included in the ride. You see the background that was included by the imagineers. You find the facts hidden in plain sight. As with some history lectures it can be slow in a few spots. But overall it is a very interesting read.

Born to a Turkish family on Cyprus, Vamik Volkan is a professor of psychiatry and is the founder of the Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction at the University of Virginia. He is the author of many books, including Life After Loss and The Immortal Ataturk. He lives in McLean, Virginia.

Blood Lines, From Ethic Pride to Ethnic Terrorism was written by Vamic Volkan, founder of the Center for the Study of Mind and Interaction. His group, including former diplomats, historians, and psychoanalysts, has been employed by administrations such as the Soviet government to solve ethnic conflicts and study relations between ethnic people. The author uses his experience as a psychoanalyst in crisis situations in providing comprehensive options for conflict resolution

This book addresses questions such as "why are they compelled to take revenge for the wrongs inflicted on their ancestors or others belonging to their bloodline?" Written in a well organized fashion, the start of a new chapter reveals a new situation of ethnic conflict in areas such as Estonia, Romania, and Cyprus. In examining each ethnic group the author not only speaks of the present but gives a concise history of that group making it possible to understand what is meant Conflict not only includes tensions between two ethnic groups but the removal of bodies from a cemetery used by both ethnic groups, visits to a Palestinian orphanage and more. With that, the author provides theories and analogies to explain the people's reactions. One example of an analogy is the equation of an ethnic group to a tent. The tent represents the identity of that ethnic group. This identity consists of a complete history of what that ethnic group has been through such as victories and defeats in wars, atrocities done to them, and even includes myths that people have about them. The tent is held up by poles, the poles representing the leader of that group. Depending on the shape of the tent, those inside may "rally around the pole" being indifferent to whether the leader has a positive or negative effect upon the group. Such are the examples the author gives.

"Bloodlines" offers a different perspective on ethnic conflict solving than most books propose. A psychological perspective is innovative and the author does a good job explaining what it means giving many examples and using analogies. For those who are skeptical on this type of perspective and who wonder how a psychological perspective, usually addressing one or at most a few people, can serve to address a whole ethnic group, the author does well in explaining how certain aspects such as myths and fears can apply to every ethnic group while other aspects can only apply to ethnic groups that have been through a particular event such as genocides for example. Also, the fact that he gives numerous concrete examples in such an array of situations shows that his theory is a credible one.

Although not necessary, it would have been nice if the author had explained why his theory is more valuable than other theories that have already been offered in the past. It would also have been nice if he had proposed solutions for future conflict solving.

This is a well written book that can be read by any individual whether for study or enjoyment. It gives a sufficiently detailed background of each conflict for one to understand how their current identity has been formed and how an ethnic group could feel resentment for another even hundreds of years after a certain act of injustice has passed while showing what needs to be done for positive developments in the relation to occur.

"Bloodlines" provides riveting description and analysis of the psychology of ethnic conflict and its driving forces of psychology of identity, cleanliness, and trauma. The manipulation by leaders has driven much of the history of both ethnic and international violence. Ironies of pride and order coupled with hate belie extreme simplification. The example of disinterring corpses to segregate cemeteries reminds one of the Crusades against the Cathar heresy when bones were disinterred to be burned to powder.

Volkan's constructive interest is conflict resolution and gaining something approaching civility between enemies as in Latvia and Cyprus in particular. The detailed human examples and insights add to the story. Yet the difficulty provides less than complete optimism.

Leaders, intelligentsia, and masses are mobilized to reconstruct an often myth based identity when crisis or attack challenges - often leading to revenge and violence.

There is not something so vague and general as a "clash of civilizations' operating (and identity conflict and vicious violence within civilizations is often every bit as brutal) so much as a driving force of narrower identity and trauma with more specific enemies. These forces can be easily manipulated by opportunistic or hateful politicians. Historical amnesia, denial, and failure to sufficiently study and understand these issues merely increase their virulence and incidence.

Volkan's "Blind Trust" also rewards study. It is probably of value to an even larger range of readers interested in history, social psychology and politics.

If you put an "ethnic enterpreneuer" on the couch...

...or better yet, several, you get something mirroring Volkan's work. Trained as a psychoanalyst, Vamik Volkan brings this unique perspective to the analysis of ethnic conflict. Particularly insgihtful is his recounting of his interviews with Abdullah Ocalan, the now-jailed leader of the PKK...Kurdish Workers Party. Volkan's study of ethnic pride, mobilisation, and terrorism and violence examines the problem of ethnic conflict upon a myriad of levels, focusing upon upper-level leadership, mid-level elites (i.e. intelligentsia), and grassroots behaviours.
This is a superb book, written in a wonderfully analytic fashion. Herein, a valuable foundational framework is offered for the understanding of ethnic conflict: relevant for students and scholars of conflict, and also for the person who wishes to attempt to make some sense of ethnic warfare.

Alan D. Evans, M.S., CPA

Alan Evans is currently a faculty member at Moore College of Art and Design and Montgomery County Community College teaching a variety of computer science and business courses.� He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Rider University and an M.S. in Information Systems from Drexel University, and he is a certified public accountant.� After a successful career in business, Alan finally realized his true calling was education.� He has been teaching at the college level since 2000.� Alan enjoys giving presentations at technical conferences and meets regularly with computer science faculty and administrators from other colleges to discuss curriculum development and new methods of engaging students.�

Kendall E. Martin, Ph.D.
Kendall has been teaching since 1988 at a number of institutions, including Villanova University, DeSales University, Arcadia University, Ursinus College, County College of Morris, and Montgomery County Community College, at both the undergraduate and master’s degree level. Kendall’s education includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. She has industrial experience in research and development environments (AT&T Bell Laboratories) as well as experience from several start-up technology firms. At Ursinus College, Kendall developed a successful faculty training program for distance education instructors, and she makes conference presentations during the year.

Mary Anne Poatsy, MBA, CFP
Mary Anne is an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. Mary Anne holds a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has more than nine years of educational experience, ranging from elementary and secondary education to Montgomery County Community College, Muhlenberg College, and Bucks County Community College, as well as training in the professional environment. Prior to teaching, Mary Anne was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking department.

Horrible start to learning technology.

My wife is taking a college course based around this book. Im a systems engineer so my wife has been asking me many questions about the information in this book. I cannot recall raging so hard at a book in my life. The terms and concept in this book are out of this world inaccurate and do not mirror real world IT whatsoever. If you need this book for some class for a degree I'm sorry. This book will do nothing but make you sound incompetent and incorrect if you ever attempt to use this information in front of an IT professional. If you are a college professor please rethink using this book for your students. You are setting them up for failure.

Required for Class, Couldn't read online

This was a required textbook for a class I was in. I love the ability to get my books digitally, but was frustrated to find that this was only able to be read on the Kindle Fire. I bought a Fire with a small screen to save space, knowing that I could read books on my laptop when I needed to view the full pages. This feature wasn't available to me in the digital purchase. Had I known this in advance I would have most likely purchased a hard copy. It left me very frustrated over the course of my semester.

Typical Pandolfini

Well, lucky us! Finally, there's a COMPLETE guide to the game of chess, "from history to strategy"! One might think that, perhaps, Murray's History of Chess, or the MCO, or Euwe's books on chess strategy, or Fine's basic endgames book, might be a bit more complete on their respective subjects. Apparently we were wrong. It is this 120-or-so page tome which is the MOST comperhensive guide to all those fields. It says so right on the cover, so it must be true!

In reality, of course, this book is anything but "complete". As most of Pandolfini's books, it is nothing but rehashed trivialities for beginners. Three chapters deal almost with nothing but the rules of the game. Once this is done, a couple of more chapters (about 40 pages or so) deal with some very basic tactics and strategy (on the "make sure your pieces are defended" and "rooks belong behind passed pawns" level). Add a chapter of a smatterings of history, and the book is done.

If you aren't an absolute beginner, there would be nothing new for you in this "complete" book, and no reason to but it.

But even if you are, there are MUCH better books out there. Try Purdy's books for beginners, or Capablanca's "Chess Fundamentals". While far older, those books have quite a few advantages: they were written by FAR better players who put FAR more effort into their books, and are available for less than Pandolfini's tomes are.

Let's get one thing straight:

This is not a book on how to improve your chess. It is not a book on opening theory or a synopsis on endgame technique. It's a sound, comprehensive work from one of the best known, most respected chess instructors in America. Bruce Pandolfini answers the questions that chess students have asked, or are likely to ask, and he answers them in a complete but concise manner. There are around 540 questions in this book: Dig deep and I'm sure you'll find one that you would likely ask.
A solid reference work that will hold a special place in one's chess library. I just hope Mr. Pandolfini revises the book, if only to update on whatever happened to Bobby Fischer.

I'm not a fan of Pandolfini's book by any means, But this is one of his books I really liked.

A very Powerful Technique that anyone can do

I own one of Vianna's previous books, Go up and Work with God, and I've got to say this one is more than "expanded" as the title suggests. This is a whole new book, organized with way more flow and chalked full of 'extra' information and detail.
I personally use the technique taught in this book and learned it directly from the book. I took no course, just read the book and followed the instructions, it's that easy! I can feel tremendous energy and am having fantastic results!
Out of all the energy medicine books I've read this is the best. It's a hands on technique, little theory with a whole lot of practical.
Highly recommended for the beginner, novice and expert practitioner.

Best I've seen

OK, there are misspellings and grammatical mistakes, big deal, the information is really neat, and more importantly, it WORKS. This book is packed with useful information. I read it 5 times through, getting useful stuff each time. I have been able to master her methods from the book, though I do also plan to take a seminar. I got more results faster with this book than any other. She doesn't just talk about feelings, she notes that you can download feelings you lack. This book, along with Richard Bartlett's Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation, was highly recommended in a LOA course I took. I went back and forth between them, which helped me understand each of them better. No rehashes here, this lady got her stuff pure. I got a copy for my daughter, for someone at work, and for my wife. I sent copies of her previous books to other friends. I have one thing to say on this book: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now Vianna may perhaps have gotten somewhat too full of herself, in the last few years. She has detractors on the web. The book itself is good. I would probably not take any courses with Vianna, based on what her students have told me, but then again I don't need to, I have this book. Now you do have to enter into the Theta state, the zero point state, the state of pure consciousness, for any of this to work.The Secret of Instant Healing, The Physics of Miracles: Tapping in to the Field of Consciousness Potential, Dowsing and Manifesting, Healing with Quantum Energy and DNA Demystified, Volume 1: A Practical Guide to Reprogramming the 13 Helixes at Zero Point approach this subject from similar places. I tried the techniques myself, and they worked for me. The detractors seem to want to force every theory into their own little boxes. This doesn't work. You have to enter into the world of the author of any book, to understand it. When I was studying calculus, which I found difficult, I had to enter it from the textbook author's viewpoint, to do anything. I couldn't force that text into my own restricted ideas. Same with this. The people giving it high marks do so from inside the book; the detractors clearly never entered into what the book is talking about. Oh well. One energy/feeling I downloaded was for my life to be better than the best I could imagine, a la Neville Goddard. At work, they did a workload equalization, which I hadn't seen or heard of in 20 years. Things aren't perfect, but they are- yes- better than the best I could have imagined, when I started. When my newborn daughter was in the hospital, she was getting vaccines, which would give her high fevers, really high, enough that the nurses got really nervous. I alternated between Matrix Energetics and this book, as this was all I had to read for 3 weeks in the hospital as I stayed with my daughter- my wife was sick- and each time, the fevers went down. Of course this was no kind of medical treatment, only an altering of patterns, however I was very convinced the book was useful. Other problems just kind of melted away. This book, and the other books I've cited, are the first steps into the world of human scale Quantum Mechanics, out of the Cartesian/Newtonian paradigm that physics left over 100 years ago, but which society is only now starting to leave. Books on shamanic work make a lot more sense in the light of Theta Healing. Heck, there are scientists who think we are only a bunch of chemicals. That's fine- but that is only their viewpoint. I want as many viewpoints as I can get- as with Neils Bohr's multi-model concept- so I can get some idea of what is real. This book helped and helps me.

This is advance healing work where you go to Theta (slow your brainwaves enough to completely connect with your subconscious) and change your mental programs. Why do I call this advance? The healing takes place in another plane, so you astral travel. You check the DNA codes (see it) and change it around to heal certain conditions like near sightedness, aging, etc.

Rex Beach was an American novelist, dramatist, and Olympic water polo player. Rex Beach was born in Atwood, Michigan but moved to Tampa, Florida with his family where his father was growing fruit trees. Early on, he was drawn to Alaska at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush.
