About the Author
Klaus Mommsen was born in 1948. In 1968, he joined the German Navy where after graduating he became a naval aviator. In 1982, he attended the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. His subsequent career saw him mostly employed with military (both naval and joint) intelligence. In 2002, he retired as Captain (Navy) from his last posting as Deputy Chief of Staff (Intelligence) of the German Fleet. As early as 1992, Mommsen started writing for the German naval magazine MarineForum (which until today lists him as editor foreign navies) and since has become a renowned German columnist for international naval affairs. He is married and lives in Germany, near Bonn.

Excellent History

Compared to the Israeli army and air force, information about the Israeli navy is practically nonexistent. We are fortunate that Klaus Mommsen has filled this void with a thorough and clearly written history of the Israeli navy from its formation up to the present. Rather than just presenting us with descriptions of battles and ship and weapons characteristics, Mr. Mommsen carefully gives us the political and military context which has shaped the Israeli navy and determined its form and employment. Mr. Mommsen is a retired naval officer and he brings an insiders knowledge, insight, expertise, and experience to this topic. Highly recommended.

A Timely Review of Israel's Cinderella Fleet

This enlightening and well-written history of the Israeli Navy fills a void in the analysis of the Middle East's balance of power. The IN is truly a "cinderella force" as the need for quick-reaction decisive victories and the fragility of it's border defenses in the "land bridge" emphasize ground and air forces. As the likelihood of life-threatening invasions from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt has receded, and Iron Dome defenses diminish the rocket threats from Iran's cat's-paws Hezbollah and Hamas, Israel increasingly looks to the strategic maritime threat. Thus, this meticulous analysis of the Israeli naval force is timely. Mommsen mentions that he was hamstrung by the IDF's naval authorities refusal to provide any assistance. Nonetheless, he has mined open sources on the internet and the few in-print references to provide a very informative survey. I visited the then-new Reshef patrol boat when it was in Baltimore harbor for the US Bicentennial in 1976. The commander of the vessel was helpful to an exent in describing his ship's capabilities and missions, but I note that the command center's display's were covered over and off-limits to those treated to the tour. I have written several articles for Strategy & Tactics on the likely strategic threats to the IN---particulary in view of the Tamar Field offshore natural gas claims--and was quite pleased to be able to utilize this timely update.
