One hundred sermons that display the victorious, although sometimes painful, historical and spiritual pilgrimage of black people in America.
A groundbreaking anthology, Preaching with Sacred Fire is a unique and powerful work. It captures the stunning diversity of the cultural and historical legacy of African American preaching more than three hundred years in the making. Each sermon, as editors Martha Simmons and Frank A. Thomas reveal, is a work of art and a lesson in unmatched rhetoric. The journey through this anthology―which includes selections from Jarena Lee, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Gardner C. Taylor, Vashti McKenzie, and many others―offers a rare view of the unheralded role of the African American preacher in American history.
The collection provides new insights into the underpinnings of the black fight for emancipation and the rise and growth of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Sermons from the first decade of the twenty-first century point toward the future of African American preaching. Biographies of the preachers put their work in the cultural and homiletic context of their periods.
The preachers of these sermons are men and women from a range of faiths, ancestries, and educational backgrounds. They draw on a vast and luminous landscape of poetic language, using metaphor, rhythm, and imagery to communicate with their congregations. What they all have in common is hope, resilience, and sacred fire. “Even during the most difficult and oppressive times,” Simmons and Thomas write in the preface, “the delivery, creativity, charisma, expressivity, fervor, forcefulness, passion, persuasiveness, poise, power, rhetoric, spirit, style, and vision of black preaching gave and gives hope to a community under siege.”
This magnificent work beautifully renders the complexity, spiritual richness, and strength of African American life.

From Booklist
Sermons by African American preachers have sustained, inspired, educated, and thrilled their congregations through slavery, Jim Crow and the various permutations of racism, and both good times and bad. Simmons and Thomas, publisher and CEO, respectively, of the African American Pulpit, offer a collection of sermons from the mid-eighteenth-century period of the nation’s First Great Awakening to the present. They begin by exploring the African roots of black preaching and the principles of black preaching, particularly the centrality of the Bible as a living text, though the collection is a cross section of Christian denominations and nondenominations. They explore the traditions of call and response and whooping, as well as the styles that gave inspiration to musical genres from gospel to blues to jazz to rap. Each section offers a brief historical overview and brief biography of the featured preacher followed by the sermons. Overall the editors cite four classifications of sermons: social activist, black identity, cultural survival, and empowerment preaching. Among the featured preachers are Alexander Crummell, Julia Foote, Sojourner Truth, Zora Neale Hurston, Noble Drew Ali, James Weldon Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, Peter Gomes, Jesse Jackson, T. D. Jakes, and Jeremiah Wright. This is a valuable and inspiring resource for readers interested in the tradition of African American preaching. --Vanessa Bush

A Treasury of Inspiration for a Pastor
By Stephen Montgomery
I write as a pastor, and not as a scholar. I write as one who loves the power of the biblical word when preached faithfully and passionately. I write as one who is busy with all the duties and responsibilities of a head of staff, preacher, teacher, administrator, counselor, and more.
If you can relate, I would urge you to put aside your busy-ness each day for 30 minutes and read this incredible collection of sermons from African-American pulpits for the past 250 years. That is what I have done, and it has enriched my soul. The sermons are given by preachers who are varied in eras, gender, style, context, and denomination, but together they give us an overview of a story that has not been told enough, at least in the historial white church of which I am a part.
I had a sense of awe as I realized the powerful tradition that contemporary African-American preachers stand in. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gardner Taylor, and Jim Forbes were not created in a vacuum, but stand upon the shoulders of not only well-known preachers of the past like Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Richard Allen, but lesser known (though not lesser of importance and inspiration) preachers like John Jea, Maria Stewart, and Henry McNeal Turner.
This is a timely book as well. In a day in which fear seems to have seized our society and especially our preachers who have wilted under pressure from "the principalities and powers," one cannot help but be inspired by the courage that each one of these possessed in the midst of hatred, oppression, and the possibility of death.
Read it and find hope, inspiration, and courage for your own preaching.

God's own prophets in a "Splendor of Antiquity" - Preaching with Sacred Fire is a #1 Hit!
By Yvonne R. Williams
I purchased my first Norton Anthology of African American Literature 13 years ago and discovered the importance, purpose and significance of an anthology. Therefore, when I heard "Preaching with Sacred Fire" was "An Anthology of African American Sermons", I immediately made my online order and prepared my literary palate for an awesome treat. And, what a treat it has been to read this extensive collection of works that provide such a meticulous historical account of African American Preaching commencing with the first ordained African American Presbyterian preacher to the current heavy weight hitters of today. I may add the unique gift of this anthology is the elaborate history lesson that accompanies the introduction of each preacher and the transitions to each new epoch being discussed.
Preaching is the primary focus of this anthology, however the derivative of the wondrous body of works is an accurate account of history being shared by God's own prophets in a splendor of antiquity that is the foundation and the fuel for current day sermons being preached. The sermons and the history surrounding the earlier genre compositions would not have been exposed in detail to the masses without the assistance of this great anthology. I would like to personally thank Ms. Martha Simmons and Mr. Frank A. Thomas for this well documented and researched reference publication. Presentation and communication tools of today will facilitate the current generation of Gods prophet the unprecedented ability to be read, heard and documented by everyone desiring to take part. However, without the enormous effort to bring "Preaching with Sacred Fire" to print the entire African American Preaching Story could not be shared by all.
I highly recommend this book as a reference tool when studying African American history and traditional bible study as well. With such a buffet of sermons and the rich narrative regarding the events and climate of the time - this book would be a great gift for any Christian or historian looking to understand God's Word and the Prophets selected to provide this delicate communication of their time on his behalf. This is truly a compressive study of African American Preaching at its best.

A Monumental Collection of Great American Preaching
By David Crumm
This book truly is a "unique" and "historic" accomplishment and, as a journalist for more than 30 years, I don't use those terms lightly. Thanks to the two co-editors of this volume, who spent years researching, collecting and obtaining permission to publish these sermons, this new book really is a monumental gift to readers. "Preaching with Sacred Fire" will stand for years to come as the greatest collection we've got from 200 years of great African-American preaching. I can't imagine anyone duplicating this publishing feat.
There's also a very important way that readers can participate in the future expansion of this nationwide effort to preserve the heritage of black preaching. At the end of this book, you'll find a section devoted to other great preachers, men and women whose work is not represented in this particular collection. The most common reason they weren't included in this collection is that their manuscripts can't be found any longer. The editors of this collection invite readers to sift through that long list of "missing" preachers and help in the nationwide effort to unearth any dusty remnants of their work that may have been overlooked to date.
If you're a preacher or hope to become a preacher, or you're simply someone who wants to improve preaching, this is a book you must read. It's a book that should be in the personal library of anyone interested in American religious life.
Your excitement in turning these pages will depend, to some extent, on your experience with African-American preaching. If you're African-American yourself or if you've had any experience with some of the nation's great black preachers, you'll get goose bumps flipping these pages. I'm a tough, skeptical old journalist and I felt the hair stand up on the back of my neck as I read sermons by such giants as the Rev. C.L. Franklin, the Rev. Charles Adams, the Rev. Howard Thurman, the Rev. Fred Sampson, the Rev. T.D. Jakes, the Rev. Vashti McKenzie and on and on. Of course, I've heard many of the greatest black preachers of the 20th century and their voices will forever resonate for me.
