A. D. GARRETT is the pseudonym for the writing collaboration of prize-winning thriller writer Margaret Murphy and forensic scientist Professor Dave Barclay. Margaret Murphy is the author of nine psychological thrillers. She lectures on writing and is a former Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow. Professor Barclay is a world renowned forensics expert and senior lecturer in forensic science at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

Forensic Mystery

his is a little different than the first book of the series. In this one, our main characters are in the US and helping out two different investigations. The cases end up linking, and everyone works together to solve the murders. The killings are horrific and the mystery is good. We see a lot of the work that's involved in solving these kinds of crimes.

The authors did a pretty good job writing the American voices, especially considering they're British and words are different here. There was one error that I caught. You know how Brits say "maths" while we say "math"? In the same way, they say "drugs" and we say "drug" as in a drug arrest. So one of the Americans said something like that, which we know wouldn't be the way we say it. But anyway, that's not really a big deal.

Looking forward to more from this series.

Hard to follow, noticeable errors

I am trying to keep reading this book, but think I may be quitting at page 42 due to all of the inconsistencies and errors. There are more than two, but the main ones that pop out in my mind are:
Chapter four is set in Scotland and the killer is sent to Home Depot for supplies.
Chapter 6 begins with Jordan Driver choosing death row in Missouri for the death of Ellesha Tate in East St Louis Illinois.

Picked up this book and haven't put it done. Exciting, suspenseful, well drawn characters and a plot that just keeps getting better and better. Great stuff.

A good book for learning data structures

I bought this book as a college course requirement. This book probably deserves five stars, but I'll explain why one star was deducted (too much/not enough).

1. The publishing is a decade old. That does not mean that the information is outdated, although c++11 has since been released. The book gave too much information. I had already learned much of the information from an introduction to programming class and two semesters of C++ programming classes. The book began by notifying the reader that the information for the book was designed for advanced programmers, but discussed basic knowledge at half-length anyways. This book would be fine as a follow-up for students who struggled through the introduction to programming course if it was taught using C++.

2. What I was hoping for was a book that provoked creative thinking by presenting a variety of uses for STL data structures, individually, and unique or combined data structures that solve interesting cases, real or imaginary. Still, there was one good chapter for advanced thinking - chapter twelve, Advanced Associative Structures. Another positive was that plenty of data structures information left out of C++ programming books was included.

UPDATE YOUR CODE EXAMPLES

The book itself is great and illustrates the core concepts well.
The code examples are grossly out of date (were talking 1990's) and completely ruins the beautiful text by adding confusing, poorly written code examples to reinforce good literature.

If you are buying this to learn data structures as a reference, great.
If you expect usable code examples this is not the book for you.
Highly Microsoft Visual Studio Centric. Not ANSI C++.

My note to the author's / publisher: You need to keep up with the times. This is technology and it moves quickly. Otherwise future-proof your code as much as possible.

Book is Alright

This book is a class requirement and has good information and detailed exercises. It gives very good hands on trainings in how to use the Standard Template Libraries. However, the book itself is of poor quality. Two weeks after reading through the book the pages came loose and fell out of the book.

A genealogist's dream come true

If you can trace your family back to colonial Massachusetts from 1620-1633, you will find these books very helpful. There are biographical sketches of many (not all) of the early settlers of Massachusetts. I did find one typo in my set--one page where a sentence cuts off in the middle, above the bottom margin, and the next page has a new title. But the books I received were new, still in their shrink wrap. Nice quality hard covers, paper, and bindings. Not all of my ancestors are there, but a lot of them are, so I've really appreciated the biographies. The book spines and covers don't say what part of the alphabet they cover, so here's a list:

Volume I covers A-F (Daniel Abbott through Samuel Fuller).
Volume II covers G-O (John Gage through Francis Onge).
Volume III covers P-W (John Page through William Wright).

Each volume is preceded by a Table of Contents, How to use This Book, Key to Sketch Headings, Key to Titles (of the numerous bibliographical sources). Volume I includes a section on the scope of the work, including criteria for inclusion, how they constructed the sketches, documentation and citations, and Julian v. Gregorian dating. It also includes a list of sources for the historical information. Volume III includes an index to all three volumes, and an appendix with some very brief additions for all three volumes.

This set does not cover the early settlers of Newbury and some of the other towns in Essex County. For that, you have to buy another set that covers just the years 1634 and 1635. It's in 7 volumes; you have to buy them individually, not all are easily available, and they're way more expensive than this set--between $50-$80 each.

The author, sponsored by NEHGS, has written a comprehensive 3 volumne genealogical document of everyone known to have lived in New England between 1620-1633. This book brings many well know sources together for a researcher. Its a 'must have' for anyone with roots in New England!

Marius S. Vassiliou is well positioned to have undertaken the compilation of this volume. He graduated from Harvard and then went on to earn a Ph.D, in geophysics from Caltech, an M.B.A. from the University of California in Los Angeles, and an M.S. in computer science from the University of Southern California.

Historical Dictionary of the Petroleum Industry is a useful reference tool for libraries and oil companies as well as for people working in the oil industry or in universities. The volume presents a systematic compilation of important events, places, people and institutions. Except for the seven mentioned above, that have shaped the modern petroleum industry worldwide. Outstanding!

This monumental historical dictionary of companies, people, places and events in the petroleum industry belongs in every college and university library, every public library, and in the company library of every firm in the industry. The 400+ well-written, information-rich entries in this 663-page dictionary feel like 4,000. They are encyclopedic and packed with cross-references. The dictionary also contains 14 appendices containing tables and charts. Typographically, the dictionary is beautiful. The dictionary was written by a former research geophysicist at ARCO Oil who has a PhD in geophysics from Caltech and an MBA from UCLA.

About the Author
Joseph Kerman was a leading musicologist, music critic, and music educator from the 1950s to the 2000s. He reshaped our understanding and appreciation of Western classical music with his first book, Opera as Drama (1956), to his last, Opera and the Morbidity of Music (2008), including his studies on Bach, Beethoven, William Byrd, concertos, and more. He was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, where he served two terms as chair of the Music Department. He wrote Listen together with his wife, Vivian Kerman.

very interesting book

Don't be scared away from this book, which is actually very interesting and well writen. I don't have a degree in music but have read little bit about music history, hamony, fugue and some music forms, which seems enough to comprehend this book. I do prefer the music analysis in detail rather than a few sentence of descriptions or generization of a piece of music, especially from the great composer like Beethoven. I just got this book and have read only a few pages, but it already attracts me. It has very detailed historical background of each Beethoven's string quartet and the analysis of it. I am really pleased to have this book!

but needed a better sense of the more global aspects of the peace

The author goes into minute detail about some of the technical aspects of each quartet. But somehow, I found that he lost the "big picture" about how the piece was structured. I never got a sense of the overall structure of each movement of a given quartet. His presentation of the minutia (key changes, chordal sequences, etc) was mildly interesting, but needed a better sense of the more global aspects of the peace.

Very rewarding if you read closely

To get anything out of this book, you need to have scores and recordings of the quartets. What's more, you need to have scores with measure numbers: the Dover reprint of the Breitkopf und H�rtel edition of the scores is a great bargain, but lacks measure numbers, which you have to write in -- a slightly tedious, but indispensable task. (Use pencil, because it's easy to make mistakes.) Once you've done this, though, you're in for a transformative experience. Mapping Kerman's analysis onto the scores is occasionally like a treasure hunt, but what treasure there is! If you're like me, and have known and loved these pieces as a listener for a long time, the insights and aesthetic wonderment to be gleaned from close study of this book can take your enjoyment and appreciation to an entirely new level.
