About the Author
Reed Mangels, PhD, RD, LD, FADA, is a nutrition advisor for the nonprofit educational Vegetarian Resource Group, as well as nutrition editor and a regular columnist for Vegetarian Journal. She is the coauthor of the American Dietetic Association's position paper on vegetarian diets as well as their new food guide for vegetarians. Dr. Mangels is an instructor in the nutrition department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Waste of money

If you are going Vegan for your pregnancy, then this book will work for you.
However, if you are already vegan, then this book is obvious and redundant of everything you already know and practice daily.
Most of the book is about being vegan and what you should eat, pregnant or not. Then there are less than 80 pages on actually being pregnant, but not necessarily vegan and pregnant. The only reason I would recommend this book, would be for anyone who is vegan and pregnant, but getting judged by family and friends who don't understand that you and your baby could possibly be safe in your pregnancy. This book is for them to show them that being vegan is perfectly safe for everyone

Good for those who have no prior knowledge

This book is great for beginners, but not that great for a vegan who already has basic knowledge about diet, nutrition and pregnancy. If you buy this book, I would recommend reading it before other pregnancy books. It is a great introduction to the whole experience and has a nice, gentle tone. I appreciate how forgiving the author is, and how she advocates health without sacrificing your sanity. The tidbits on nutrition were helpful, however my favorite part of the book was the advice on how to deal with people around me questioning by diet choices. Other reviewers noted the recipes-I have yet to try them because my kitchen is already full of vegan cookbooks. I was really just looking for vegan information specific to pregnancy and I must say that it is limited. Most of the book focuses on pregnancy in general and covers all the basics like what not to consume, pregnancy symptoms, labor and delivery, breastfeeding and many other things I've already learned from other books, my doctor or the internet.
Pros: great for vegan beginners or those new to pregnancy, gentle and supportive tone, simple and easy to remember nutrition information, great advice for dealing with those who question the vegan diet, great introductory tool to pregnancy, labor and delivery and the breastfeeding process, lots of recipes, appendix with other sources of information
Cons: Little benefit to seasoned vegans with a general nutrition background, no real in-depth information and very brief, covers many of the basics noted in every other pregnancy resource, doesn't really cover "everything vegan" as promised

Good book but not what I was looking for

Great book but I felt it was written more for someone who wasn't already vegan. I was looking for more information but as a vegan of many years it didn't include anything I didn't know already, and I wasn't looking for recipes.
