Practical Approach to Fitness the Israeli Defense Force Way

For those of us without extensive means or access to a gym, it can be daunting to get one's self in shape. Amos Bar-Khama proposes a simple way of walking towards fitness. His approach slowly has one increase the load being borne, the distance being walked, and the intensity of the walk. It's a very sound way of exercising.
The stretching part was basic but good. The recipes were excellent and kosher, nonetheless! This solid book is a great way to approach fitness in a pragmatic way. I recommend Krav Maga, the Israeli defense Force's self defense technique as well.
I highly recommend this excellent fitness book.

American Fitness Strategy?

I recently retired from the American military after 24 years and have seen many fitness schemes come and go. Ten years ago I was faced with a choice between getting in shape or leaving the military. I had reached a point in my career where I rarely worked 'in the field' and was becoming a pear shaped desk-jockey. The ideas presented in this book (while apparently based on Israeli military research) are not macho Special Forces and are not based on any gimmick. This is simple, self paced, aerobic exercise and diet suggestions based on commonly known principles. Surprisingly simple and SURPRISINGLY effective. In my opinion, this is the fitness solution that most people are looking for today. I wish this would become the American Fitness Strategy.

A timeless book of fitness.

I first read this book in 1982, over 25 years ago. I was recovering from back surgery and unable to run. So to get in shape I began the technique described in the book. When I could run again, I ran my first 10K run. I finished in 36 minutes, even though I had done no other aerobic activity for almost 10 months, and had never run a 10K before in my life. Preparing to undergo shoulder surgery now, I picked up a copy of the book again. This will once again be my method of recovery. Probably one of the best and most overlooked fitness books out there. Of the dozens of fitness books on my shelf this is one that really delivers. I wish it were still in publication.

Other "chronic prostatitis" sufferers and I have had our prostates removed, only to find that we still have the symptoms of "chronic prostatitis." It wasn't until I focused my attention on the lowly Cowper's glands, usually a pair of pea-sized glands in the male reproductive system close to the prostate and emptying into the urethra, that I experienced dramatic improvement in symptoms to the point where I feel cured. This book cantains my story along with scientific literature that supports my hypothesis that "chronic prostatitis," or whatever the experts call it lately, is usually a chronic infection of one or more Cowper's glands. I also describe ways that infected Cowper's glands have been treated in the past and ways that they might be treated in the future and the successful way that mine were treated. Cowper's glands are very similar to Bartholin's glands in women. Bartholin's glands are well known to have a high potential for chronic infection.

A different view?

I appreciate anything that someone took the time and effort to write. Especially when its really not for financial gains but to help other people out. The book is short and honestly difficult to follow at times. I get what the author is saying because he clearly says every 2 sentences, that is the cowpers glands. It is drilled into the reader like a nails driven by a hammer into wood. Its an interesting perspective for anyone suffering from this awful condition. I wish the author would have talked more about his personal story and how/when it started, and the symptoms he was experiencing. All that was really mentioned was back/headaches and ED. For any sufferer there is a host of more issues so it felt confusing and felt myself asking if this was something else the whole time. The majority of the book, like 98% is citing a study or pieces of a study/article and then stating opinion. Its more of a review of other studies with a biased opinion for each. Of course you are only getting bits and pieces of full studies so you have to trust the author... I guess at the end... I really just gained perhaps another alternative to treatment or cause? The treatment options the author went through are drastic and last resort by all means. So I appreciate what the author has given but you need to use your own head from this point on.

About the Author
David F. Bjorklund is Professor of Psychology at Florida Atlantic University, where he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in developmental psychology since 1976. He received a B.A. degree in psychology from the University of Massachusetts in 1971, an M.A. degree in psychology from the University of Dayton in 1973, and a Ph.D. degree in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. He has received numerous teaching and research awards from Florida Atlantic University, and is the recipient of an Alexander von Humboldt Research Award. He has co-authored several books. Bjorklund has served as Associate Editor of CHILD DEVELOPMENT, published by the Society for Research in Child Development, has served on the editorial boards of DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY, DEVELOPMENTAL REVIEW, COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY REVIEW, JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE PSYCHOLOGY, JOURNAL OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT, JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL CHILD PSYCHOLOGY, and SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY QUARTERLY, and has served as a contributing editor to PARENTS MAGAZINE. He has published more than 100 scholarly articles on various topics relating to child development and has received financial support for his research from the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the German Research Foundation. About the Author
Wilford Welch's career has been devoted to understanding and taking action to address global challenges - as a U.S. diplomat in Asia, a professor of international business, the publisher of a world affairs publication and as an international business consultant. In 2004 he co-founded the Quest for Global healing initiative which brings thousands of people together from around the world every other year to help transform their concerns over environmental and social challenges into concrete initiatives. Wilford has degrees from Yale, Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley. He lives in Sausalito, California.

Being part of the solution

I was raised in a family that believed that if we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem. Yet figuring out how to participate in that solution can sometimes be challenging. Tactics of Hope provides us with these needed suggestions and guideposts as well as support in understanding our gift and then where and how we can bring that gift forward into the world, becoming part of the solution. Wilford Welch reassures us that we really do matter. That as we find our passion and bring it forward, we are in very good company. It is in this context that Welch speaks to the heart of evolving communities around the world. He features stories about others who brought their unique gifts forward in support of that evolution, on a local or global level. Welch's stories of individuals making a difference are uplifting and inspiring. Each story uniquely exemplifies a potential model for governments, corporations, non-profits or individuals in how to move into a dynamically changing world, all becoming parts of the solution. Highest recommendation for all generations as it brings forward the hope so beautifully captured in it's title.

Awesome!

Awesome book on social entrepreneurship with inspiring case studies and excellent perspectives for seasoned practitioners in the field of nonprofits/social change as well as those less experienced who are interested in making a difference in the world and looking for some guidance/advice/opportunities. I used selected parts of the book for a workshop I taught at Stanford University and highly recommend "Tactics of Hope".

Wolfgang Scherer forschte und lehrte in den USA und Deutschland bevor er sich in London niederlie�, wo er derzeit im Risikomanagement eines Finanzinstituts arbeitet.
